2023 Ford Super Duty: Choosing the Right Trim

Hard-working Americans know the Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 pickup trucks. They are legendary for their power, towing, payload capability, and longevity.

The Super Duty trucks get a makeover this year, with simplified trim and option packages and a new 6.8-liter gas engine replacing last year’s 6.2-liter V8. Still in the lineup is a 7.3-liter gas V8 and two variations of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel. A new 10-speed automatic is the only transmission option, and 4-wheel-drive (4WD) becomes standard on XLT and higher trims.

What hasn’t changed is the dizzying number of bed, cab, and chassis configurations, including dual-rear-wheel axles on the F-350. XL and XLT trims offer the choice of Regular Cab, SuperCab, or Crew Cab. The Lariat starts with the SuperCab and offers a Crew Cab, while the King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited are Crew Cabs only. A 6-foot-9-inch or 8-foot bed rounds out the main exterior choices. Ford’s Super Duty competes with the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500, and Ram 2500 and 3500 — the usual suspects.

When properly equipped, the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 take home honors for Best-in-Class towing (40,000 pounds with a gooseneck, 30,000 pounds conventional), Best-in-Class horsepower (both diesel and gas), and Best-in-Class payload (8,000 pounds gas/7,100 pounds diesel).

The XL trim comes standard with 2-wheel drive (2WD). Four-wheel drive (4WD) is optional. The standard engine is the 6.8-liter V8, with the 7.3-liter V8, 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel, and 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 High Output turbodiesel optional.

The XL is a good choice for those who ride their trucks hard and don’t worry about getting a few scrapes or dents. It features black bumpers with a rear bumper step, manual telescoping trailering mirrors with power heated glass and built-in convex mirror, a removable tailgate with a power lock, and a 2.5-inch trailer hitch with a 7-wire harness and 4- and 7- pin connector (3-inch hitch on F-350 dually).

The XL features trailer-sway and brake control, 17-inch painted steel wheels, remote keyless entry, a 3-ton mechanical jack (4-ton hydraulic on F-350 dually), and a 34-gallon gas tank (48-gallon on long-wheelbase Crew Cab). The XL bed features four tie-downs, sidesteps, and lamps in the bed and cargo area.

Safety systems include full airbag coverage, hill-start assist, auto on/off halogen headlights, and a rearview monitor.

The no-frills XL cab features a manually adjustable 40/20/40 vinyl front bench seat with driver’s side manual lumbar support, manual single-zone air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with controls for the cruise, Bluetooth, and message screens.

A 4.2-inch LCD productivity screen serves as the instrument cluster information center, with analog gauges for the fuel, engine coolant temp, oil pressure, and transmission fluid temperature.

Infotainment duties fall to Ford’s SYNC 4 system, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Along with a 4-speaker AM/FM/MP3 stereo, the system includes FordPass Connect subscription-based apps for a 5G Wi-Fi hot spot, remote start, vehicle status reports, and vehicle locator, to name a few.

Through various packages and options, XL buyers can add forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, various rear axle ratios, a snowplow prep package, a camping package, a 360-degree camera, a power-sliding rear window, and a beefed-up front suspension.

The XL Off-Road Package adds 33-inch off-road tires, skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, and water fording vent tubes for the transfer case and axles. Those looking to go further can opt for the FX4 Off-Road Package, which adds all-terrain tires, an off-road suspension, hill-descent control, and skid plates.

The Tow Technology Package requires the XL Driver Assist and 360-Degree Camera packages but adds Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Trailer Reverse Guidance, and lane-departure warning (XL only).

Other upgrades include a spray-in bedliner, a power winch, gooseneck prep, rapid heat cab heater (diesel), Pro Power Onboard 2kW bed outlet, LED bed lighting, side running boards, 18-, 19-, and 20-inch wheels, and a long list of accessories, upfitter packages, and dealer add-ons.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Ford Super Duty trim?

If you’re looking for a solid work truck that is not afraid to get dirty, the base XL is as tough as they come. However, if you want a truck that doubles as your daily driver, then the XLT or Lariat makes the best choice.

If you’ve got deep pockets and need a truck as technologically advanced as it is capable, the Limited is our first choice, with the King Ranch a close runner-up. The King Ranch has a more rugged feel better suited to rural customers, such as ranchers, farmers, and oilfield workers.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2023 Ford Super Duty get?

As the EPA doesn’t evaluate ¾- or one-ton pickup trucks, fuel economy estimates for the 2023 Ford Super Duty pickup trucks are unavailable.

  • Which 2023 Ford Super Duty trim offers the most safety?

In testing the 2022 Super Duty, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave it excellent marks, with an overall five-star rating on the Crew Cab and four stars for the Regular Cab.

The safest Super Duty models are those that include Co-Pilot360 2.0. When so equipped, the Super Duty F-250 and F-350 provide the same level of protection and driver assistance as most high-end cars.
