The 2023 Honda HR-V gets a complete makeover this year, with a bigger body, more power, and more interior room. Built off the new Honda Civic platform, the HR-V rides better than the previous generation, which used the compact Honda Fit as its base.
Although the HR-V is more expensive this year, buyers will find the added premium brings a more upscale interior and nicer materials. These upgrades make the new HR-V more competitive against rivals such as Toyota Corolla Cross, Kia Seltos, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Mazda CX-30.
A 158-horsepower 2.0-liter engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) powers all HR-V trims. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard; all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional.

2023 Honda HR-V LX (starting at $23,800)
In Honda-speak, the LX designation represents the most basic trim — big on value but with minimal options and upgrades. The LX is the trim for people who only need the basics and want to keep the cost to a minimum. That said, the LX comes nicely equipped, including a long list of standard safety and driver-assist systems.
Honda Sensing comes standard and employs a new single-camera system with a broader field of view. The safety suite includes a forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow. Also standard are lane-departure warning and mitigation, a rear backup camera, and a tire-pressure monitor.
New this year is Traffic Jam Assist, which helps maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead when driving in low-speed traffic situations, and Traffic Sign Recognition, which alerts the driver to the posted speed limit with an icon in the instrument cluster.
Additional driver aids include automatic high-beam headlights and Rear Seat Reminder, which prompts the driver to check the back seat for pets or children before exiting the vehicle. The HR-V gains more airbag protection this year, with rear side-impact airbags joining the standard front, front side-impact, front knee, and front and rear side-curtain airbags.
The LX exterior is attractive but not extravagant. A quick once-over reveals auto-on/off LED headlights, LED taillights, a reverse-linked intermittent rear wiper with washer (automatically activates when the front wipers are active), power mirrors, remote keyless entry, and 17-inch silver-painted alloy wheels. A color-keyed rear spoiler also is standard.
The LX offers seven inches of ground clearance and includes Hill Descent Control, which maintains a low speed when descending steep hills. Standard Hill Start Assist keeps the vehicle from rolling forward or backward when stopped on a steep incline. The LX’s 3-mode drive system includes Normal, Eco, and Snow settings.
The LX’s cabin features cloth seats, a manually height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat. Interior amenities include automatic climate control, power windows with auto-up/down driver’s windows, power door locks, and push-button start. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel with controls for the Bluetooth, audio, and adaptive cruise controls comes standard, as do sliding sun visors with vanity mirrors. Charging and connectivity options include two 2.5-amp USB charge ports in the center console, one USB smartphone/audio interface port, and one 12-volt outlet in the rear cargo area.
The driver enjoys an analog speedometer and tachometer separated by a 7-inch driver interface screen that plays host to various functions, including the adaptive cruise control, a digital speedometer, the Traffic Sign Recognition system, and other pertinent information.
Sitting atop the dash is a 7-inch color infotainment touchscreen hooked to a 180-watt 4-speaker audio system. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and HondaLink apps are standard, as is active noise cancellation that uses the speakers to neutralize objectionable sound waves. Oddly, SiriusXM satellite radio is unavailable and only offered on the most expensive EX-L trim, although you can stream it if you have the app on your phone.
The only option is Honda’s Real Time AWD, which adds another $1,500 to the bottom line.
With the $1,295 destination fee, the 2023 Honda HR-V LX costs $25,095. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $474. See 2023 Honda HR-V LX models for sale near you
2023 Honda HR-V LX includes:
- Adaptive cruise control – When using cruise control, this system keeps the HR-V at a safe distance from the traffic ahead and can even low-speed follow, a helpful feature in stop-and-go traffic.
- Rear-seat side-impact airbags – Not a common feature in an SUV at this price, and one more way Honda ensures everyone on board is well protected.
- Apple CarPlay/Android Auto – This allows a smartphone to pair with the car’s infotainment system, granting access to music, navigation, and messaging apps.
- Automatic climate control – Set the desired temperature, and the system maintains it.
2023 Honda HR-V Sport (starting at $25,900)
The Sport adds more style to the HR-V and more standard and safety equipment. Given its additional features and modest price increase, we’d say it’s the value leader and likely to be the most popular trim.
Building off the LX, the Sport adds remote engine start, 18-inch gloss black alloy wheels, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a sport grille, chrome exhaust finishers, and dark-tinted rear privacy glass.
The Sport gets a blind-spot monitor and a proximity key fob that allows the doors to unlock simply by touching the handle. Once out of the HR-V, the doors automatically lock when detecting you’ve walked away from the vehicle.
Heated front seats come standard, as does an upgraded audio system with six speakers.
Other features of note include lighted vanity mirrors, auto-up/down front windows, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.
With the $1,295 destination fee, the 2023 Honda HR-V Sport costs $27,195. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to approximately $513. See 2023 Honda HR-V Sport models for sale near you
2023 Honda HR-V Sport includes:
- Blind-spot monitor – Keeps an eye out for cars riding in the vehicle’s blind spot and alerts the driver to their presence with a visual and audible warning.
- Heated side mirrors – Activated with the rear defroster, heating elements behind the side mirrors help prevent snow and ice buildup.
- Remote start – Allows remote starting of the HR-V, a nice feature when the weather outside turns nasty.
- Privacy glass – Dark tinted rear privacy glass helps keep the interior cool and protected from prying eyes.
2023 Honda HR-V EX-L (starting at $27,900)
The top-line EX-L offers amenities previously unknown to the HR-V buyer without pushing the price out of the upper $20,000 range.
Building off the Sport trim, the EX-L adds 17-inch machined alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, low-speed braking control, and a power moonroof.
The EX-L’s cabin gains leather seating, an 8-way power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and ambient LED lighting.
The EX-L sees some significant upgrades to its infotainment system, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, a 9-inch color touchscreen, and an 8-speaker sound system. Also standard are HD Radio and a wireless charging pad.
With the $1,295 destination fee, the 2023 Honda HR-V EX-L costs $29,195. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $551. See 2023 Honda HR-V EX-L models for sale near you
2023 Honda HR-V EX-L includes:
- Leather seating – Adds a touch of luxury and is easier to clean than cloth.
- Dual-zone automatic climate control – Allows driver and front passenger to create individual climate zones.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto – Streams directly from your phone to the infotainment system, negating the need for messy wires and an open USB port.
- Low-speed braking control – At low speeds, such as when backing up or pulling forward, the system can detect an object in the car’s path and alert the driver. If the driver fails to react, the system will stop the vehicle before a collision can occur.
