Hyundai is making significant inroads into the electric vehicle (EV) market, and the 2023 Ioniq 5 is the perfect example. Its compact dimensions mimic those of another popular Hyundai SUV, the Tucson. However, the Ioniq 5 is more carlike in its approach to driving, without the tall ride height of an SUV and a sportier look and feel.
Available in three trim levels, the Ioniq 5 offers a choice of standard or long-range battery packs and rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Only the rear-drive S provides the standard range battery, making it the price leader and the model with the least range.
The Ioniq 5 comes loaded with high-tech gadgetry and cutting-edge safety features in typical Hyundai fashion. It competes well when placed against the Tesla Model 3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4, Chevrolet Bolt, and Nissan Ariya.
Unfortunately, due to changes in the tax laws, the Ioniq 5 no longer qualifies for a federal tax rebate, giving its domestic rivals a leg up in pricing.
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range (starting at $41,450)
The least expensive Ioniq 5 is the SE Standard Range. It comes only in RWD form, with the least powerful battery (58 kWh) and a range of 220 miles. The Standard Range’s 125-kW electric powertrain is the equivalent of 168 horsepower.
A regenerative braking system has four sensitivity settings, the most extreme allowing for a one-pedal driving technique where removing one’s foot from the accelerator causes the vehicle to slow and come to a complete stop.
The Standard Range includes a bevy of safety and driver-assist systems. Forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection and Junction Turning are among the more notable. That last feature warns of danger when turning left across oncoming traffic and can even activate the brakes to help avoid a collision.
Other driver aids include a blind-spot monitor with collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic detection, and a rear backup camera with lane guidance. Also standard are lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Hyundai’s Highway Driving Assist I (HDA I) works with adaptive cruise control to help steer the Ioniq 5 on highways or roads with clear lane markers. However, drivers must keep their hands on the wheel, so this is not a fully autonomous self-driving system. Instead, HDA I acts as an assist designed to help lessen fatigue and keep the vehicle centered should the driver become momentarily distracted.
Less obvious but still significant is a driver attention monitor, rear seat reminder (alerts the driver to check the back seat before exiting the vehicle), and Safe Exit Assist, which can prevent passengers from opening their door when there is a risk of danger from approaching vehicles.
The Ioniq 5 Standard Range features individual tire pressure sensors with digital readout and a tire mobility kit in place of a proper spare tire.
Stylish 19-inch wheels punctuate the Ioniq 5’s sleek exterior, as do automatic LED headlights, LED taillights, heated power side mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators, and flush door handles that present themselves when they sense your (actually your key fob’s) presence.
The same key fob allows locking the doors by simply touching the door handle after exiting the vehicle.
Dark-tinted rear privacy glass covers the back doors and liftgate. Where an engine typically resides, you’ll find a small .085 cubic-foot front trunk, sometimes called a frunk.
The Ioniq 5’s futuristic interior includes two large 12.3-inch digital clusters, one for the gauges and vehicle information and the other for the media, climate settings, and infotainment system.
The media center includes navigation and traffic flow information, voice activation, SiriusXM satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and an AM/FM/HD Radio 6-speaker sound system.
Also included are Hyundai’s Bluelink Connected Car services and remote charge access. With three years of complimentary service, owners can use their smartphones to start the vehicle, set the climate controls, and lock or unlock the car.
There are five USB-A ports, three up front and two in the back seat. Two 12-volt outlets are also included, one in the front seat area and one in the cargo bay.
The Ioniq’s supportive seats are covered in stain-resistant cloth and tout an 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support and a 6-way manual passenger seat.
Also standard are heated front seats, dual-zone automatic temperature control, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with controls for the audio, Bluetooth phone, adaptive cruise control, and regenerative brake paddles.
The Ioniq 5’s rear seat is a 60/40-split folding design with a manual sliding and reclining feature but no cargo area release levers.
Rounding out the Standard Range’s interior features are sliding sun visors with lighted vanity mirrors, a 1-touch up/down driver’s power window, a dampened glove box door, and LED interior lights.
Every Ioniq 5, regardless of trim, includes 2-year unlimited complimentary 30-minute DC fast charging at any Electrify America station.
There are no factory options, but buyers can pick from several dealer-installed upgrades, such as a first aid kit and carpeted floor mats.
With the $1,295 destination charge, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range costs $42,745. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $768. See 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range models for sale
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range includes:
- Adaptive cruise control – Hyundai’s Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go can maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, automatically slowing and even stopping the Ioniq 5 to prevent a collision.
- 12.3-inch display screens – These massive digital screens present their information in brilliant, full-color clarity. The center stack features voice and touch controls for its various functions.
- Advanced driver-assist systems – The Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range is loaded with an advanced driver-assist suite designed to help anticipate and prevent a possible collision.
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE (starting at $45,500)
The SE includes the same features as the SE Standard Range but gets a more significant 77.4-kWh battery pack, a 168-kW (225-hp) electric powertrain, and an increased range of 303 miles.
With the optional dealer-installed hitch ($450), the RWD SE is rated to tow 2,300 pounds. (The Standard Range Ioniq 5 SE is not prewired for a hitch.)
All-wheel drive is available on the SE, adding another $3,500 to the price.
The AWD option includes a second electric motor at the front for a combined output of 320 hp. With AWD, the Ioniq 5 delivers better performance than the RWD models, but its range drops to 266 miles and its tow rating to 1,650 pounds.
Also included with AWD is a heat pump that significantly improves heating and cooling efficiency while using less power. It can even help reduce fast-charging times.
With the $1,295 destination charge, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE costs $46,795. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $841. See 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE models for sale
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SE includes:
- 77.4-kWh battery pack – This larger battery gives the SE greater range and more power, both much appreciated.
- 2,300-pound tow rating – Although we don’t imagine Ioniq 5 owners will be doing a lot of towing, it’s nice to know it is possible with the SE.
- Available AWD – This upgrade provides better grip and acceleration in the wet and the dry.
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL (starting at $47,450)
The SEL builds off the SE RWD, adding a few more luxury and high-tech features for not a whole lot more money.
The Ioniq 5 SEL includes power-folding exterior mirrors, a hands-free power liftgate, ambient interior lighting, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and H-Tex imitation leather upholstery.
Also standard is a trailering package with 4-pin trailer prewiring, front parking sensors, front auto up/down power windows, and rear air vents.
The SEL adds a feature to the forward collision warning and Junction Turning. It’s a cross-traffic component that detects vehicles approaching from the left or right, such as when approaching a 4-way intersection.
Hyundai’s Digital Key allows you to use your smartphone like a key, unlocking and starting the Ioniq 5 from an app. You can even let a friend or family member borrow the car by transferring a digital key to their phone.
For 2023, Digital Key is compatible with select Android phones, Apple iPhones, and the Apple Watch.
Finally, the SEL gets Highway Driving Assist II (HDA II), an upgraded system with automatic lane-changing capabilities. With the system engaged, the driver need only activate the turn signal. If the rear-facing radar sensors determine it is safe to move over, the system will automatically perform the lane change maneuver.
As with the SE, AWD adds another $3,500 to the SEL’s bottom line.
With the $1,295 destination charge, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL costs $48,745. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $876. See 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL models for sale
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL includes:
- Hands-free power liftgate – With a key fob in a purse or pocket, one need only approach the Ioniq 5, stand behind it for a few seconds, and the liftgate automatically opens.
- Heated steering wheel – Quickly heats the steering wheel rim, so it’s comfortable to the touch, a nice feature to wake up to when overnight outdoor temperatures plummet.
- Wireless charging pad – Allows for charging a compatible device without needing the correct USB port size or a cable.
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited (starting at $52,600)
The Limited includes all the Ioniq 5 bells and whistles. It builds off the SEL’s standard equipment list with even more features, helping to make the Limited’s nearly $53,000 price tag seem more worth the price of admission.
The Limited’s upgrades include projector-style LED headlights with premium-style LED accent lighting, a 360-degree Surround View Monitor, rear automatic emergency braking, and a Blind-Spot View Monitor that uses a side camera to show an image of the adjacent lane when signaling a lane change.
The Limited features a massive fixed glass roof panel, rain-sensing wipers, and a color head-up display with augmented reality (AR) functions. With AR switched on, the system displays symbols and arrows on the road to alert when departing the lane or needing to change lanes.
Both front seats are 8-way power adjustable with power lumbar support and cooling ventilation. The driver’s seat gains memory settings for the seat and side mirrors and what Hyundai calls a “Relaxation” function that reclines the seat and extends a lower leg rest so you can power nap while charging your Ioniq 5.
The Limited gets an 8-speaker Bose Premium audio system, a sliding center console, rear door sunshades, and a two-way onboard charger (Vehicle to Load) that allows the Ioniq 5 to power AC devices like a laptop, lights, or a small refrigerator.
The Limited’s Remote Smart Parking Assistant can self-parallel or perpendicular park the Ioniq 5 or pull the car from a tight parking space while the driver controls the forward and backward motion of the vehicle via the key fob.
All-wheel drive is a $3,900 option. The extra $400 over the SE and SEL AWD price is due to the addition of 20-inch alloy wheels.
With the $1,295 destination charge, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited costs $53,895. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to approximately $968. See 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited models for sale
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited includes:
- Ventilated front seats – With air circulating through the seats, these help keep you comfortable and dry on hot days.
- Bose Premium Audio – This 8-speaker Bose sound system is a vast improvement over the stock stereo and a must-have for music lovers.
- Remote Smart Parking Assist – This helpful feature allows the Ioniq 5 to park itself or remove itself from a tight parking space. By this, we mean a situation when someone has parked too close, preventing you from accessing the driver’s door.
Excellent list, thank you, I’ve been searching for this for ages. Can you confirm that the Ioniq 5’s V2L feature is available on all trims? I found a forum post saying it was, but nothing official. You do, however, need to buy the adapter for it to work, but in theory is it available on all trims?
Hello , Glad you enjoyed the article. Please visit https://www.autotrader.com/car-news for more of our current articles!
Hello, Brian. Yes, I have confirmed with Hyundai that the V2L adapter will work on all trims and comes standard when ordering the Limited. I believe you can find it on the Hyundai consumer site Ioniq 5 accessories page. It sells for around $220.
