2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6, an electric vehicle, delivers impressive range and performance, but its impressive styling has everyone talking. Aiming at the Tesla Model 3, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, and the 2024 Polestar 3, the Ioniq 6 offers three well-equipped trims, the option of rear or all-wheel drive (AWD), and a choice of standard or extended range batteries.

Hyundai is doing well in the range department, with the Ioniq 6 delivering up to 361 miles on a single charge. That figure bests many competitors, including the Model 3, even if just by three additional miles.

2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Standard Range: $41,600; SE: $45,500; SE AWD: $49,000

The entry-level Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE comes in three versions. The Standard Range SE is a rear-drive vehicle with a 111-kW (149 horsepower) electric motor and 58-kWh battery, allowing for a 240-mile range.

For an additional $3,900, buyers can upgrade to a longer-range SE that includes a 168-kW (225 hp) electric motor and a 77.4-kWh battery, giving it a range of 361 miles.

The Ioniq 6 SE AWD adds a second electric motor for a combined output of 320 hp and a 316-mile range.

The SE comes equipped with features most buyers expect and a few that may surprise.

The list begins with Hyundai SmartSense, a suite of standard driver aids that includes forward collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction turning detection. Also included are lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert with emergency braking.

The Ioniq 6 features adaptive cruise control with stop/go and Highway Driving Assist (HDA1), which helps keeps the car centered between highway lane markers.

It also features automatic high-beam headlights, a rear backup camera, a driver attention monitor, a safe exit monitor, front and rear parking sensors, and a system to remind drivers to check the back seat for babies or pets before exiting the vehicle.

The Ioniq 6’s unique exterior includes power-operated door handles that present themselves either when you click the unlock button on the fob or touch the handle with the proximity key fob on your person.

Other exterior features include LED projector beam headlights, heated side mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, 2-speed variable intermittent wipers with aero blades, a hands-free power trunk with automatic open, an integrated rear spoiler, and a power-operated charge port door.

The SE’s interior gets stain-resistant cloth upholstery and an 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support. Heated front seats come standard, as does a 60/40-split folding rear seat with a center armrest, a driver’s auto up/down power window, and a manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel with brake-regenerative paddle shifters.

The steering wheel also houses four pixel lights illuminating in different colors to indicate certain functions, such as using voice commands, placing the gear selector in reverse, or displaying the battery’s status.

Amenities count a push-button start, sliding sun visors with mirrors and vanity lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear seat air vents, and a heat pump on the longer-range SE and AWD models. The Ioniq’s heat pump compresses refrigerant, a process that generates heat to warm the cabin. Think of it as the reverse of how your car’s air conditioning works.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster houses vital information like speed, power usage, and adaptive cruise control settings.

The SE’s infotainment system starts with a 12.3-inch color touchscreen housing navigation, a 6-speaker AM/FM/HD Radio receiver, SiriusXM satellite radio, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, and voice recognition capability. Hyundai’s Bluelink connected services are also available, as are over-the-air updates.

A single Type A USB charge/data port resides up front, with four Type C USB charge ports divided evenly between the front console and back seat.

With the $1,115 destination fee, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Standard Range costs $42,715. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment works out to $768. See 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE models for sale near you

2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE includes:

  • Adaptive cruise control — The Ioniq 6’s adaptive cruise control maintains a set speed and distance from the car ahead. It also helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
  • Heated front seats — Multilevel heated front seats quickly warm occupants, making it easier to remain comfortable without needing to crank up the climate controls.
  • Power extendable door handles — When not needed, the door handles remain flush against the door panels, creating a clean, uncluttered look that improves aerodynamics.

2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SEL: $47,700; SEL AWD: $51,200

The Ioniq 6 SEL comes with a more powerful 225-hp electric motor setup and offers the option of AWD. Compared with the SE, the SEL’s range drops from 361 miles to 305, mainly due to the larger 20-inch wheel and tire combo and added features.

The AWD version sees overall range drop from 316 miles to 270.

On the safety front, the Ioniq 6 SEL adds features to the collision avoidance system, namely the ability to detect when it’s not safe to enter an intersection, not safe to overtake another car on a 2-lane road, and the ability to help steer the car away from a potential frontal or side collision.

Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance apply brakes when detecting danger, such as pulling out from a parallel parking spot when a vehicle is approaching from the rear.

Highway Drive Assist 2 (HDA2) adds lane-change assist to the adaptive cruise control. With this system, drivers need only signal their intent to change lanes, and the system automatically performs the maneuver when it’s safe. HDA2 also includes a feature that will move the Ioniq 6 to the lane’s edge if it senses an adjacent car coming into your lane.

Additional SEL features include 64-color ambient interior lighting, H-Tex synthetic leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, auto up/down front windows, a wireless charging pad, and Hyundai’s Digital Key, which turns a smartphone into a key.

With Digital Key, owners can enter and start this electric Hyundai using their smartphone and share the key with friends or family, allowing them to use their phones to access and drive the vehicle.

With the $1,115 destination fee, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SEL costs $48,815. On a 60-month loan at 3% financing and zero down, the monthly payment works out to $877. See 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SEL models for sale near you

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 trim?

We think the best Hyundai Ioniq 6 value is the rear-drive SE with the long-range battery. It offers the best range of the bunch and has enough safety, tech, and comfort features to satisfy most. Moving to the SEL gets you a few more perks but knocks 56 miles off the range.

Those looking for the latest tech should jump to the Ioniq 6 Limited, which has the same range as the SEL but adds less than $100 to the monthly payment.

  • How long does it take to charge a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6?

Using a standard Level II home charger, the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Standard Range takes about five and a half hours to reach full charge. Long-range and AWD versions take closer to seven hours.

Using a 50-kW charging station, the Standard Range can reach a 10 to 80% charge in 58 minutes, while the other models take about 73 minutes.

Using a 350-kW DC fast charging station, all Ioniq 6 models can complete a 10 to 80% charge in just 18 minutes.

  • Which 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 trim offers the most safety?

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 has yet to be crash tested. But its sibling, the Ioniq 5, scored top marks in government and independent testing, earning an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick + accolade.

We expect the Ioniq 6 to replicate these scores.

As for the safest trim, we’d say it’s the Limited due to its additional driver aids and safety systems.
