When the next model-year edition goes on sale in March 2022, it will be as the 2023 Land Rover Discovery.
It will ring in an all-new flagship trim level: the Metropolitan Limited Edition.
Land Rover is also making several features standard on Discovery’s base trim. They include wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, tri-zone automatic climate control, and an 11-speaker Meridian audio system.
There are some rivals like the Volvo XC90 and Porsche Cayenne with crisper handling. Discovery, however, is a family-friendly, off-pavement warrior with impressive on-road manners.
Capable of seating seven, the Discovery is a 3-row luxury SUV packed with standard features. We like it for its elegance, off-road acumen, finely appointed cabin, and choice of two dynamic engines.
Land Rover offers Discovery in four trim levels: S, R-Dynamic S, R-Dynamic HSE, and Metropolitan.
All-wheel drive (AWD) with Terrain Response is standard on all grades. An 8-speed automatic transmission is also standard across the board.
Standard in the S and R-Dynamic S is a 295-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Based on the 2022 model, its estimated fuel economy is 19 miles per gallon in the city, 22 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in combined driving.
Available on the R-Dynamic S ($5,600) and standard on the upper grades is a 355-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 mild-hybrid (MHEV) powertrain. A 48-volt electric motor supplements the V6. Its estimated mileage is 18 mpg city/24 mpg highway/21 mpg combined.
2023 Land Rover Discovery S (starting at $56,600)
The 2023 Land Rover Discovery S starts at $56,600.
Standard fare includes 20-inch alloy wheels, hill-start assist, auto on-off LED headlights, LED taillights, and heated power-fold outboard mirrors with driver’s-side auto-dimming.
Other features are rain-sensing wipers, a power liftgate, 14-way power-adjustable heated front seats, leather seating, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Also included are tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry with push-button start, and a power-adjustable steering wheel.
Within the infotainment system are an 11.4-inch touchscreen, an 11-speaker 400-watt Meridian audio system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.
Among the driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-keeping assist. Also standard are traffic-sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera.
The Cold Climate Pack ($600) adds a heated steering wheel, a heated windshield, and heated windshield washer jets.
Adding the Hot Climate Pak ($950) gains you a front-console cooler and quad-zone automatic climate control.
You can add a front-console cooler ($400) and Wi-Fi hotspot capability with a data plan ($400).

2023 Land Rover Discovery S includes:
- Terrain Response – This is Land Rover’s driver-controlled driving mode system. It oversees the air suspension, throttle, and AWD system.
- Tri-zone automatic climate control – Separating the vehicle into three areas (front right, front left, and rear), it allows setting the temperatures in each. It then automatically maintains those preset temperatures.
- Auto-dimming mirrors – Using photosensors, they recognize bright headlights approaching from behind. They then automatically dim the reflection of those lights. Included are the rearview and driver’s-side outboard mirrors.
2023 Land Rover Discovery S R-Dynamic (starting at $59,700)
The 2023 Land Rover Discovery S R-Dynamic starts at $59,700.
Despite the $3,100 difference in their base prices, there isn’t a lot of daylight between the S and S R-Dynamic. Mostly appearance elements separate them. For example, the S R Dynamic gets a gloss-black roof.
With the exception of the V6 MHEV powertrain, they even offer the same option choices.
