2023 Lexus ES: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Lexus ES offers a wide range of personalities, including a fuel-sipping hybrid, two performance-oriented Sport grades, and the option of year-round traction afforded by all-wheel drive (AWD).

Regrettably, the AWD option only comes with the 4-cylinder engine, the least potent offering in the ES lineup.

Highlights for the ES include a smooth and quiet ride, a luxurious and spacious cabin, an impressive array of safety and driver assist technology, and a long list of optional packages for a more personalized experience.

Although there are 14 different trims, buyers, in many cases, will find it’s just the powertrain choice that separates the various models from one another.

Competing for your luxury dollar are rivals like the Cadillac CT5, Volvo S60 Recharge, and Audi A6. However, performance lovers will find even the sportiest Lexus ES trails sedans like the BMW 5 Series, Genesis G80, and Acura TLX Type S.

A note to buyers: Unlike other manufacturers, Lexus now includes the $1,150 delivery fee in the vehicle price, so the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is the actual price you’ll pay before taxes and options.

2023 Lexus ES 250 AWD (starting at $42,490)

The ES 250 AWD comes with a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and Lexus Dynamic Torque Control AWD.

Lexus is a big believer in providing the driver with as much assistance as possible, which is why the ES comes standard with the Lexus Safety System+ 2.5.

The suite includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Lane Tracing Assist helps keep the vehicle centered between lane markers when using the adaptive cruise control. At the same time, Road Sign Assist recognizes and posts traffic sign information, so you’ll always know the posted speed limit.

Intersection Assist warns of oncoming vehicles when you’re making a left turn. It also can detect pedestrians when making a left or right turn.

Additional safety systems include a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic detection, a rearview monitor, 10 airbags, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

The ES 250 includes bi-LED headlights with auto-leveling, LED taillights, a power moonroof, 17-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels, and the Smart Access keyless entry system that allows you to unlock the doors by touching the handle.

The interior amenities are 10-way power front seats with power lumbar support, perforated NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters, and a color digital instrument cluster and driver display.

As comfortable as the rear seats are in the ES 250, they don’t fold down. This omission makes it difficult to carry things larger than the 16.7-cubic-foot trunk unless they fit through the tiny pass-through hidden behind the folding center armrest.

Mounted atop the center dash, you’ll find an 8-inch color touchscreen infotainment center featuring wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Wi-Fi, and the Lexus app offering services such as remote start, vehicle health reports, and more.

A 10-speaker Lexus Premium sound system covers music duties.

The most desirable options for the ES 250 get bundled into the Premium Package. Checking this box gets you heated and ventilated front seats, a power tilt/telescoping heated leather steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, and rear emergency braking.

Also included are wiper de-icers, a wireless charging pad, power-folding and auto-tilt-down side mirrors, and memory for the driver’s seat, mirrors, and power tilt wheel.

Individual options include a power rear sunshade, a rear spoiler, wood interior trim, ambient lighting, a foot-activated hands-free power trunk lid, adaptive Triple Beam LED headlights, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with cloud-based navigation, and a head-up display.

Buyers can opt for the Mark Levinson sound system with 1,800 watts driving 17 speakers. A SmartAccess card key and 18-inch wheels round out the available upgrades.

2023 Lexus ES 250 AWD includes:

  • 10-way power front seats – These form-fitting seats make it easy to find a comfortable position and feature power lumbar support for both the driver and the front passenger.
  • Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay – Allows seamless smartphone integration with the car’s infotainment system, all via a Wi-Fi connection.
  • Adaptive cruise control – This system goes beyond basic cruise control, controlling the distance to the vehicle ahead. The system can even automatically slow or stop the ES without driver input.

2023 Lexus ES 350 (starting at $42,490)

The ES 350 gives up the 250’s AWD setup in exchange for front-wheel drive and a more potent engine. The swap results in a net neutral price increase, meaning the ES 350 costs the same as its ES 250 counterpart across all trim grades.

Powering the ES 350 is a 302-hp 3.5-liter V6, an engine we think is much better suited to the ES’s premium sedan status.

Standard and optional equipment for the ES 350 is the same as the ES 250 AWD, except for an available Panorama glass roof.
