The 2023 Mazda CX-30 isn’t your run-of-the-mill compact crossover. Its style blurs the line between wagon and SUV, with driving characteristics more in line with a sport sedan. The CX-30’s sleek styling carries over to the interior, where a blend of design, materials, fit, and finish combine to create a cabin unlike anything in the class.
Mazda provides several trim options, each offering more than the former. Five of the seven trims feature a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and an advanced all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.
The remaining trims offer a 250-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with the same AWD and 6-speed transmission.
Sizewise, the CX-30 slots in below the CX-5 and CX-50. In this space, buyers might cross-shop the CX-30 against the new Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taos, and Hyundai Kona. At the top end of the CX-30 price range, luxury SUVs like the Lexus UX and BMW X1 might even be fair game.
2023 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S: $22,950
The base CX-30 2.5 S boasts the same seductive styling and interior quality as the more expensive trims, which makes it the catch of the day for shoppers on a tight budget.
Along with its 2.5-liter engine and standard AWD, the base CX-30 features forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Mazda’s radar adaptive cruise control is also standard and includes a stop-and-go function that can bring the CX-30 to a complete stop and then resume speed once the coast is clear.
New this year are rear seat side-impact airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners. They join the front, front side-impact, and full-length side curtain airbags.
Additional safety and mechanical features include an auto brake hold, a rearview monitor, off-road traction assist, and G-Vectoring Control Plus that helps keeps the CX-30 planted during aggressive cornering.
The 2.5 S comes with LED auto on/off headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a rear wiper/washer, power side mirrors, and remote keyless entry.
An elegant cabin features cloth upholstery over manually adjustable front seats, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, one-touch up/down power windows, push-button start, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with controls for the audio, cruise, and Bluetooth.
Single-zone manual air conditioning is included in the price, as are power door locks, map lights, and a rear window defroster.
Unexpected at this price point are features such as a digital speedometer with a center display screen and an analog tachometer, fuel, and temperature gauges. We’re also pleasantly surprised to find an 8-speaker stereo backed by an 8.8-inch infotainment display.
Unlike almost all competitors, the CX-30’s infotainment system does not feature touchscreen operation. Instead, it features a console-mounted rotary controller and buttons south of the shift lever. Voice commands can also be used, but only for certain features.
Additional features for the system include HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a healthy dose of Mazda Connect apps. With Mazda Connect, owners can opt for a Wi-Fi hot spot, remote start, vehicle status and service information, navigation, and emergency services.
The base CX-30 has two USB ports and one 12-volt outlet.
Factory options are nonexistent, but dealer-installed accessories are abundant. One of our favorites is adding navigation by way of a simple SD card. The upgrade requires no additional labor or parts. Just plug in the card, and you’re good to go.
Your dealer can also add a frameless auto-dimming mirror and a wireless charging pad.

2023 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S Select: $25,250

The Select gains 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, side-mirror turn signals, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Deep-tinted rear privacy glass keeps the interior cool and off-limits to prying eyes, while Mazda’s Advanced Key unlocks the doors when sensing a hand touch the door handle.
The Select cabin includes dual-zone automatic climate control, leatherette-trimmed seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and rear seat air vents.
We should note that even at this level, heated side mirrors are not included and don’t show up until reaching the Carbon Edition trim.

- Power moonroof – The CX-30’s power sliding glass moonroof is a nice way to let more light and fresh air in the cabin. The moonroof includes a vent position ideal for neutralizing the buffeting when only the rear windows are down (dog owners will understand).

2023 Mazda CX-30 2.5 S Premium: $31,060
The Premium is the most luxurious non-turbocharged CX-30 you can buy. But for some inexplicable reason, it loses the Carbon Edition’s heated side mirrors.
Building off the Preferred trim, the Premium goes all out with front and rear signature illumination, a power liftgate, silver-finish 18-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel paddle shifters, and a choice between black or white leather upholstery.
Premium buyers enjoy a color head-up display, auto-leveling adaptive LED headlights, and a navigation system with traffic sign recognition.
A 12-speaker Bose audio system comes standard but may not be available on early production models due to supply chain shortages. If your car arrives without the Bose system, you’ll receive a $440 credit but no ability to upgrade once the shortages end. Be sure to check with your dealer before ordering.
If a premium sound system is on your must-have list, you’ll need to move up to one of the turbocharged trims that don’t have the Bose delete provision.
