2023 Mitsubishi Outlander: Choosing the Right Trim

The Mitsubishi Outlander, a compact 3-row SUV, was a totally new model for 2022. Sales have been strong thus far, so little has changed with this 7-seater for the 2023 model year.

As before, the Japan-built Outlander continues to offer an upscale interior complemented by a handsome exterior. Its unibody chassis is closely related to that of the Nissan Rogue. (Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Renault have a global alliance.)

Although it’s a compact SUV, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander, with a third-row seat best reserved for kids, is a bit larger than rivals like the Toyota RAV4. As before, front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) Outlander models are available.

Although the Nissan Rogue is powered by a new turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander continues to be powered exclusively by a proven 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that sends 181 horsepower to the wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with shift paddles and eight pre-set steps.

For 2023, Mitsubishi sells the Outlander in ES, SE, SEL, and SEL 40th Anniversary grades. Blacked-out Black Edition models are available in SE and SEL trims. Late in 2022, a 40th Anniversary Outlander will arrive, followed in early 2023 by a sporty Ralliart edition.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) remains standard. All-wheel drive (AWD), called “Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC)” by Mitsubishi, continues as a $1,800 option. S-AWC manages the power delivery to all four wheels via six driver-selectable modes: Eco, Normal, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow, and Mud. Power is sent where it is deemed most necessary.

The EPA rates the FWD version of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander at 24 mpg city/31 mpg highway/27 mpg combined driving. With AWD, that rating drops only slightly, to 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.

Competitors for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander include the Volkswagen Atlas and Tiguan, plus others like the Kia Sorento.

We’d be remiss not to mention that the Outlander, like each new 2023 Mitsubishi car and SUV, is backed by an excellent 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander ES: $27,595

Although it’s a base model, the Outlander ES is far from sparsely equipped. Automatic on/off LED headlights are standard, along with automatic high-beam headlights and LED daytime running lights.

In addition to 18-inch alloy wheels, the 2023 Outlander ES comes standard with dual-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, a push-button starter, cruise control, hill-start assist, and fabric upholstery.

The infotainment system centers around an 8-inch touchscreen and a 6-speaker audio system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Nor is safety forgotten: Standard safety tech includes forward-collision warning (with automatic emergency braking), blind-spot monitoring, lane-changing assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear emergency braking. Rounding out the safety aids are parking sensors, a driver-attention alert, and a lane-departure warning.

Note: When you order AWD (S-AWC), the $1,800 premium includes headlight washers and a front wiper de-icer.

Adding the $1,195 destination fee to the ES’s base price totals $28,790. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to roughly $517 per month. See 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander ES models for sale near you

Indeed, for only $3,050 over the price of the base ES, the Outlander SE gets a lot of extra features we like.

One option we’d strongly consider is the SE Tech Package. For $2,300, it includes a 12.3-inch digital driver display, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, a power panoramic sunroof, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

You also might like the Outlander SE Black Edition, which starts at $31,845 and is graced with several black styling elements, most notably the alloy wheels.

Adding the $1,195 destination fee to the Outlander SE’s base price brings the total to $31,840. With no money down for 60 months at 3% interest, financing works out to about $572 per month. See 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander SE models for sale near you
