2023 Nissan Rogue: Choosing the Right Trim

The Nissan Rogue swims in a competitive sea of equally attractive compact crossovers. The Rogue offers an intriguing blend of standard equipment, power, fuel economy, price, and style to stand out from rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, and Ford Escape.

Powering the Rogue is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine good for 201 horsepower. It’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that routes power to the front wheels, but all-wheel drive (AWD) is a $1,500 option on all trims.

Note: The Nissan Rogue Sport, a slightly smaller compact SUV made in Japan, is covered elsewhere.

2023 Nissan Rogue S: $27,760

Right out the gate, the base Rogue S impresses with its generous list of standard driver assists, some of which are optional on rival SUVs. Standard for 2023 is forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane departure warning.

Also included are a blind-spot monitor, rear-cross traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, a rear backup camera, and rear automatic braking.

Additional safety systems include front and rear side-impact airbags, driver and passenger knee airbags, and 2-row side curtain airbags. The Rogue S even comes with a system to remind the driver to check the rear seat (for sleeping babies or pets or packages) before exiting the vehicle.

Nissan’s Easy-Fill Tire Alert is another clever feature, chirping the horn and flashing the lights when you’ve reached the correct tire pressure.

Mechanical features worthy of note include hill-start assist, which keeps the Rogue from rolling backward when stopped on an incline. It also has a drive mode selector that adjusts throttle mapping and transmission shift points over three settings: Normal, Eco, and Sport.

Models with AWD gain additional modes for Snow, Off-Road, and Auto, all designed to improve traction and stability on various road surfaces.

Standard equipment for the Rogue S includes dark gray 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic on/off LED headlights, LED taillights, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, power mirrors, and rear parking sensors.

The Rogue S interior is another area that defies its entry-level status, with a handsome two-tone gray and tan color treatment covering the dash and upper door panels. Charcoal gray cloth is the only upholstery option.

The Rogue S cabin features a height-adjustable manual driver’s seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat with reclining seatbacks, and another uncommon feature in a base model: rear seat air vents.

Other amenities for the Rogue S include a tilt/telescoping steering wheel featuring paddle shifters, audio, Bluetooth, and cruise controls. A push-button start is standard, as is a one-touch up/down power driver’s window, remote keyless entry, manual air conditioning, and a trip computer.

Nissan’s 8-inch color touchscreen infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an AM/FM radio with four speakers, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The Rogue’s front center console houses one USB-A, one USB-C port, and an auxiliary input jack.

Little touches we appreciate include sliding sun visors with vanity mirrors, variable intermittent front wipers, and a rear wiper/washer.

With the $1,335 destination charge, the 2023 Nissan Rogue S costs $29,095. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and zero down, the monthly payment comes to about $549. See 2023 Nissan Rogue S models for sale

The SV includes Nissan’s ProPilot Assist suite, which adds adaptive cruise control. This system maintains a set distance between the Rogue and the vehicle directly ahead. The adaptive cruise can slow and even stop the Rogue when traffic does the same.

A lane-centering feature keeps the Rogue centered between lane markers, minimizing the amount of driver input needed to keep the vehicle on course.

The Rogue SV’s infotainment system sees a few modest upgrades, including two additional speakers, NissanConnect apps and services, and an available Wi-Fi hot spot.

Rear-seat passengers gain one USB-A and one USB-C charge port.

Adding to the comfort and convenience quotient, the Rogue SV features a remote start app with automatic climate settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an 8-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support.
