2023 Subaru Ascent: $33,895
The base Ascent offers Subaru quality, safety, and driver-assist systems at a price most families can afford. It isn’t big on options or colors, but it does the job.
Power for every Ascent trim comes from a 260-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and standard Symmetrical AWD. Subaru’s X-Mode with hill descent control comes standard, providing better traction in low-speed situations such as off-roading or plowing through deep snow. The Ascent has a maximum tow rating of 5,000 pounds.
Standard features for the base Ascent include 18-inch alloy wheels, steering-responsive LED headlights, a rear washer/wiper and rear camera washer, power side mirrors, and black roof rails.
Subaru’s EyeSight suite of active safety features includes a forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
Other driver aids include automatic high-beam headlights, a rear backup camera, a tire pressure monitor, and Rear Seat Reminder that tells the driver to check the back seat for children or pets before exiting the vehicle.
The Ascent offers seating for eight, with a 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat and 60/40-split-folding and reclining second- and third-row seats covered in durable cloth fabric.

The Premium adds more features while keeping the price in the mid-$30,000 range. Premium models come standard with seating for eight but offer the option of second-row captain’s chairs, reducing total occupancy to seven passengers.
The Premium trim adds a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, and automatic emergency steering that helps steer the vehicle away from a potential collision.
Other Premium features include deep-tinted rear privacy glass, independent second-row climate controls, an 8-way power driver’s seat (but no power lumbar support), and leather wrap for the steering wheel and shift knob.
Also standard are heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icers. The rearmost seats gain reading lights with one-touch interior illumination. Other Premium upgrades include color-keyed side mirrors with integrated turn signals, chrome door handles, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.
