2023 Subaru Legacy: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Subaru Legacy returns with a new face, updated technology, and a more potent Sport trim after receiving a mid-lifecycle boost.

For 2023, the trim levels are as follows: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring XT. The “XT” tacked onto a nameplate identifies the engine as turbocharged. Every Legacy model pops out of the Indiana factory with all-wheel drive (AWD).

Although many of Legacy’s 2023 enhancements target specific trim levels, all models enjoy a more prominent grille, a freshened front bumper, and more complex LED headlights. Subaru’s EyeSight bundle of advanced safety tech now delivers lane-centering assist in league with adaptive cruise control.

Available driver-assist tech now includes reverse automatic emergency braking.

Subaru packs a wide-angle front camera into its top-end Touring XT, increasing the field of view.

Subaru spikes the adrenaline level in the Sport trim, replacing the 182-horsepower 2.5-liter engine with the 260-hp 2.4-liter turbocharged powerplant already powering the XT models.

Legacy models fitted with the 11.6-inch touchscreen (Premium and up) will also provide wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

We like the Legacy for its AWD, impressive fuel economy, reasonable pricing, solid safety scores and technologies, and available turbocharged engine.

Key rivals against Legacy include the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevy Malibu, and Nissan Altima.

Base, Premium, and Limited models generate forward motion with the 182-hp 2.5-liter flat 4-cylinder engine. According to government estimates, it delivers 27 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg in combined driving. A continuously variable automatic transmission (with eight driver-selectable steps) directs power to all four wheels.

2023 Subaru Legacy Base: $24,395

We suggest you skip this trim and move up to at least the Premium grade. Although the Legacy Base is well-equipped, Premium provides a richer mix of standard features for $2,100 more. It’s a bargain.

The Base content includes 17-inch alloy wheels, auto-on/off adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, and remote keyless entry.

Inside, you find the basic convenience features most buyers demand. They include a manually height-adjustable driver seat, eight airbags, and a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel. Single-zone automatic climate control, a 60/40-split folding second-row seat, and a 4.2-inch LCD color driver display are also standard.

Fulfilling the entertainment and connectivity requirements is an infotainment system with a 7-inch upper touchscreen and a lower 7-inch screen for climate control and other functions. Also included are a 4-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, satellite-radio capability, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Two USB ports and a 12-volt power port are standard, as well.

Subaru doesn’t offer any factory-installed options for the Legacy Base.

Adding the $1,020 destination fee to the Base trim price brings the total to $25,415. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 5% interest works out to about $480 per month. See 2023 Subaru Legacy models for sale near you

There is no shortage of reasons to bypass the Base grade for Premium. Among them is an upgraded infotainment interface with an 11.6-inch touchscreen and Wi-Fi hot spot capability. Also added are wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a second 12-volt power port for the rear seat.
