2023 Toyota Camry: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Toyota Camry may have the most varied lineup in midsize sedan history. No other competitor even comes close to the Camry’s robust trim lineup that includes five 4-cylinder models with the choice of front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) and three V6 trims in FWD only. There’s even a hybrid option, reviewed separately. The Camry competes in the dwindling, yet still vital, midsize sedan category, which includes the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Hyundai Sonata, Kia K5, and Subaru Legacy.

Beyond its aggressive good looks, the Camry sedan offers exceptional performance and fuel economy, a stellar reputation for reliability, and some of the best resale numbers around. It also comes loaded with Toyota’s best safety and driver-assist systems, with a wide range of prices and equipment to suit any need. The Toyota Camry sedan stands as a worthy alternative in a world where not everyone wants or needs an SUV.

2023 Toyota Camry LE: $26,220

The entry-level LE is the least expensive trim in the Camry lineup, but it is in no way lacking.

Powering the LE is a 203-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder hitched to an 8-speed automatic transmission. AWD is available but drops the horsepower to 202 and the fuel-tank capacity from 15.8 to 14.4 gallons. For the record, these stats also apply to all 4-cylinder Camry sedans, regardless of trim.

The LE comes standard with a suite of driver assists as part of the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ (TSS 2.5+) package. The group contains forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control (works at speeds above 25 mph), and Road Sign Assist to detect certain highway road signs and alert the driver.

Other TSS 2.5+ features include lane-departure warning with steering assist that detects when the Camry is drifting from its lane and alerts the driver. If the driver fails to respond, the system will make slight adjustments to the wheel to keep the vehicle from crossing over the lane markers.

Similarly, lane-tracing assist works in conjunction with the adaptive cruise control, using cameras to detect lane markers and keep the vehicle centered, even in modest curves.

The LE comes equipped with a rear-seat reminder system that reminds the driver to check for pets or children before exiting the vehicle.

Additional mandated safety equipment includes 10 airbags, electronic traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, a rearview monitor, and a tire-pressure monitor.

The LE rides on 17-inch alloy wheels and features auto-on/off bi-LED headlights, LED taillights, power mirrors, washer-activated intermittent wipers, and keyless entry with an in-key remote fob.

The LE cabin touts 1-touch up/down power windows, power door locks, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth, and cruise controls, plus dual-zone automatic climate control and a 4.2-inch driver’s multi-information display.

An 8-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support is standard, as is a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Buyers can choose between gray, black, or beige cloth upholstery.

Other standard features worth mentioning include a rear defroster, an overhead console with map lights and sunglass storage, and dual sun visors with sliding extensions and lighted vanity mirrors.

The LE’s 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Optional connected services include Toyota Safety Connect and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Options for the LE include a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart Key keyless entry with proximity key fob. Also available are a wireless charging pad and a power sunroof.

The Cold Weather Package adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated side mirrors.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry LE costs $27,315. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $515. See 2023 Toyota Camry LE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry LE includes:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – These allow smartphone integration with the car’s infotainment system, giving access to apps, music, message, and maps, all via the 7-inch touchscreen or voice commands.
  • Automatic emergency braking – The system can detect potential collisions and warn the driver in certain low-speed situations. If the driver fails to slow down, the system can slow or stop the car before an accident occurs.
  • 8-way power driver’s seat – Permits drivers of all sizes and shapes to find the ideal driving position. Includes power lumbar support to help reduce lower back fatigue.
  • Available Cold Weather Package – With heated seats, steering wheel, and side mirrors, this group is a must-have for anyone living where snow and cold are routine.

2023 Toyota Camry SE: $27,760

Think of the SE as a sportier-looking version of the LE. The equipment isn’t all that different, with the main upgrades being a blackout headlight surround treatment, a rear spoiler, 18-inch black alloy wheels, a black mesh grille, and color-keyed rocker panels. Color-keyed heated side mirrors come standard, as does a single exhaust with dual chrome tips.

The SE ditches the LE’s cloth seats for SofTex synthetic leather upholstery with cloth inserts and gains a leather-trimmed steering wheel and a tire-pressure monitoring system with direct pressure readouts.

An optional Nightshade Special Edition package elevates the SE trim’s appearance, adding a black mesh grille from the Camry TRD, black mirror caps, a black rear spoiler, and black-trimmed headlights and taillights. Unique 19-inch bronze wheels and Midnight Black, White, and Reservoir Blue paint schemes distinguish the Nightshade exterior.

Except for the Nightshade Package, the SE’s options and packages are practically the same as the LE.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry SE costs $28,855. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $545. See 2023 Toyota Camry SE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry XLE: $30,970

The XLE expands on the LE’s standard equipment plus opens the door to far more features, including an available V6 engine. Like the LE and SE, the XLE features a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. AWD is optional but not offered with the V6.

As one of the most popular trims in the Camry lineup, the XLE brings a lot of value to a $30,000 sedan. Building off the LE, the XLE adds full LED headlights, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, Smart Key keyless entry, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Interior upgrades include a wireless charging pad, an electric parking brake, rear air vents, a 7-inch driver multi-information display, leather upholstery, and an 8-way power passenger seat. Also standard are heated front seats, wood inlay interior trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a HomeLink universal transceiver.

Safety improvements include a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, while the adaptive cruise control gains a full speed range function that allows for low speed follow at speeds down to 1 mph. The system can also bring the vehicle to a complete stop and then resume travel once traffic moves forward.

The XLE’s infotainment system is upgraded to a 9-inch touchscreen and given additional connected service apps such as Service Connect and Remote Connect.

Options for the XLE include a heated steering wheel, a panoramic sunroof, a JBL audio system, and navigation.

The Driver Assist Package adds ventilated front seats, rear automatic emergency braking, the 360-degree Bird’s-Eye View Camera, and a 10-inch color head-up display.

The XLE V6 adds a 301-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine and includes all the XLE’s standard equipment, a 10-inch color head-up display, JBL audio system, and a panoramic sunroof. It also adds about $5,000 to the bottom line.

Options for the XLE V6 mirror those of the XLE, minus any equipment already standard.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry XLE costs $32,065. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $605. See 2023 Toyota Camry XLE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry XLE includes:

  • Smart Key – This keyless entry system uses a proximity key fob that alerts the car to your presence. Once in range, simply touching the door handle unlocks the vehicle, while a push of a button is all that is needed to start the engine.
  • Blind-spot monitor – Watches for vehicles approaching in the adjacent lane and warns the driver. If you activate the turn signal and it’s unsafe to change lanes, the system will sound an audible alert and flash an icon in the appropriate side mirror.
  • Available ventilated front seats – Help keep driver and passenger cool and dry when the temperatures outside soar.
  • Available JBL audio – Tuned by famed audio specialist JBL, the Camry’s optional audio upgrade contains an 800-watt amp driving nine speakers, including a powered subwoofer.

2023 Toyota Camry XSE: $31,540

Like the SE is to the LE, the XSE is just a sportier version of the XLE, with much of the same feature content but a bit more spice.

The XSE adds 19-inch gloss black wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, dual exhaust, a unique grille with gloss black surround, and a color-keyed rear spoiler. Also included are color-keyed rocker panels and a mesh lower grille insert.

Interior upgrades include a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, unique dash-and-door trim in patterned metal, and an available perforated red leather upholstery.

The XSE’s optional features are the same as the XLE, except for a 2-tone paint option featuring a black painted roof.

The XSE V6 has the same equipment as the XLE V6 and the same option packages minus equipment already included with the V6 upgrade.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry XSE costs $32,635. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $616. See 2023 Toyota Camry XSE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry XSE includes:

  • Sport suspension – Includes stiffer springs and shocks for a firmer ride and improved cornering.
  • Steering-wheel paddle shifters – Allows the driver to quickly change gears without removing their hands from the steering wheel.
  • 19-inch gloss black wheels – Give the XSE a rather sinister look, especially with the optional black painted roof treatment.
  • Available panoramic sunroof – This massive glass panel covers nearly the entire passenger compartment. A front panel opens to let in more air, and an electric sunshade covers the panel when requiring less light.

2023 Toyota Camry TRD: $33,285

The Camry TRD (Toyota Racing Development) is less about the family and more about having fun. It builds off the SE trim’s standard features set and then adds the 3.5-liter V6 engine, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, TRD cat-back exhaust, and 19-inch matte black wheels.

One downgrade is the A/C system, which moves from dual-zone to single-zone automatic climate control.

The TRD treatment carries over to the exterior with a gloss black grille and mesh insert, color-keyed sport side rocker panels, a gloss-black front splitter, side aero skirts, a rear diffuser with red pinstriping, and a gloss-black pedestal style rear spoiler.

The TRD interior upgrades the SofTex upholstery with black cloth inserts, red seatbelts and stitching, and headrests with embroidered red TRD logos. Red stitching also adorns the steering wheel and shift knob.

To improve overall rigidity, the TRD’s rear seat is fixed in place and does not fold down. Having a big hole in the roof will also lead to body flex, so the sunroof option has also been removed.

Options for the TRD include summer or all-season tires, the JBL audio system, and the two-tone paint scheme with the black-painted roof.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the estimated price for the 2023 Toyota Camry TRD is around $34,380. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $649. See 2023 Toyota Camry TRD models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry TRD includes:

  • TRD sport suspension – Developed by Toyota’s racing division, this track-tuned suspension adds stiffer springs and shocks, beefy stabilizer bars, and a firmer steering feel.
  • TRD cat-back exhaust – From the catalytic converter back, this custom exhaust helps the engine breathe more freely, improving performance while emitting a low, rumbling exhaust note.
  • TRD interior – Looks particularly fetching in all black with bright red accents.
  • Available summer tires – Softer rubber for better grip, ride, and handling. Not recommended for use in temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Toyota Camry trim?

Given its price, feature set, and available equipment, the XLE with either the 4- or 6-cylinder engine is the best overall trim. Driving enthusiasts will gravitate to the TRD, but even if you can’t afford this trim, the SE’s looks might still satisfy your need to look cool for less cash.

  • How many MPGs does the 2023 Toyota Camry get?

When equipped with the 2.5-liter engine and front-wheel drive, the 2023 Toyota Camry LE and SE return an EPA-estimated 28 mpg city/39 mpg highway/32 mpg combined. Adding AWD to the mix lowers fuel economy figures to 25/34/29.

The XLE and XSE with the 2.5-liter engine earn 27 mpg city/38 mpg highway/31 mpg combined, with their AWD counterparts at 25/34/28.

The XLE V6 earns 22 mpg city/33 mpg highway/26 mpg combined, while the XSE is rated at 22/32/26. The TRD with the same engine is rated at 22/31/25.

These EPA fuel economy figures are for the 2022 Camry; we don’t expect them to change for 2023.

  • Which 2023 Toyota Camry offers the most safety?

In crash testing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Toyota Camry its highest rating of five stars overall, with five stars in the frontal, side-impact, and rollover crash tests.

The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has similar glowing reviews, giving the Camry its best score of Good in every category and awarding it a Top Safety Pick + designation.

As for which trim is the safest, the more driver assists, the better, so our pick would go to the XLE or XSE with the optional Driver Assist package.
