2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid takes all that’s good about the RAV4 and adds standard all-wheel drive (AWD) and a hybrid gas/electric powertrain. The result is a RAV4 that gets vastly better fuel economy and has more power for passing and merging, yet only costs about $1,250 more than its gasoline-only AWD equivalent.

For 2023, RAV4 Hybrid gets some new features, including an improved multimedia system, an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a new Woodland Edition that gives the hybrid light off-road ability.

Competing for your hybrid dollar are equally admirable SUVs such as the Ford Escape Hybrid, Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, Honda CR-V Hybrid, and Kia Sportage Hybrid. Of course, none of these competitors offer the number of trims afforded RAV4 buyers, although most hold their value equally well.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE

Like all RAV4 Hybrid grades, the LE features a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors (one up front and one powering the rear wheels) for a combined output of 219 horsepower. Power runs through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

Among the LE’s five drive modes is an EV mode for running solely on electric power and a Trail mode for venturing off-road.

From here, the hybrid LE follows pretty much the same content and options as its non-hybrid twin. That means Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 comes standard, bringing vital driver assists such as forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control.

Also standard are automatic high-beam headlights, traffic sign recognition, a rearview monitor, hill-start assist, and eight airbags.

A quick walk around the exterior reveals 17-inch alloy wheels, a rear wiper/washer, intermittent wipers, keyless entry, dark-tinted privacy glass, and LED headlights.

The LE’s interior features cloth seating with manual front seats, a 60/40-split reclining fold-flat rear seat, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, one-touch up/down power windows, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

A hybrid-oriented gauge cluster includes a digital speedometer with an analog hybrid power meter separated by a 7-inch multi-information display.

The LE gets an updated infotainment system this year. It features an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 6-speaker stereo. The system includes Toyota’s connected services, which enable access to cloud-based navigation, remote start, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and various emergency services.

ToyotaCare free scheduled maintenance covers two years or 25,000 miles, with free roadside assistance for two years and unlimited miles.

The LE has only a few optional upgrades, the most important being a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic detection.

  • Dual-zone climate control – The LE’s automatic climate control features separate settings for the driver and passenger.
  • Adaptive cruise control – When engaged, the adaptive cruise control maintains a set distance from the vehicle ahead, slowing as traffic slows and speeding up when the coast is clear.
  • Automatic high-beams – The RAV4 Hybrid’s high-beam headlights can illuminate in low-light situations or automatically dim when sensing another vehicle in the area.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE vs. LE

For less than $30 more each month, the XLE offers the features and options most buyers prefer.

Adding to the LE’s content, the XLE touts heated power side mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, and a Smart Key proximity key fob that unlocks the doors when touching either front door handle.

A blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert come standard.

The driver upgrades to an 8-way power seat with power lumbar support and a push-button starter, while rear seat passengers enjoy two USB charge ports. The XLE’s sun visors feature sliding extensions, and the cargo bay gains a tonneau cover and 12-volt outlet.

XLE buyers can opt for a power moonroof, a height-adjustable power liftgate, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers with de-icers, and a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel.

  • Blind-spot monitor – This handy feature warns the driver of adjacent vehicles hiding in the RAV4’s blind spots.
  • Heated side mirrors – Anyone who lives where freezing weather is par for the course will appreciate side mirrors that melt ice and snow.
  • Power driver’s seat – The XLE’s power driver seat affords greater latitude in finding a comfortable driving position and includes 2-way power lumbar for better lower back support.

The XLE Premium boasts 18-inch alloy wheels, a height-adjustable power liftgate, a power moonroof, and LED fog lights.

Interior enhancements include soft-touch padding on the dash and armrests, synthetic SofTex leather upholstery, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob.

Options beyond those offered on the XLE or already not standard include 2-position driver’s seat memory, front and rear parking sensors with braking, a wireless charging pad, a 10.5-inch touchscreen, and an 11-speaker JBL audio system.

The SE grade adds a sporty look to the RAV4 Hybrid. It features most of the XLE’s standard equipment. Still, it distances itself with 18-inch black alloy wheels, bi-LED headlights, a sport suspension, a black-painted lower bumper, mirror caps, overfenders, and rocker panels.

The SE’s cabin shows off stylish black cloth seat fabric with blue stitching, the latter appearing on the dash and doors. Blue ambient lighting completes the look.

Options for the SE are the same as the XLE.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XSE vs. SE

The XSE takes all the sporty good looks of the SE and adds a 2-tone paint scheme with a black painted roof, a height-adjustable power liftgate, a power moonroof, blue shock absorbers, and vertical LED accent lights.

Interior upgrades include SofTex-trimmed seats with blue stitching, heated front seats, an overhead console, a 10.5-inch multimedia touchscreen, and additional blue ambient lighting in the doors, footwells, and dash bins.

Optional equipment above the SE includes the Smart Key system on all four door handles, a foot-activated power liftgate, a 360-degree Panoramic View monitor, front and rear park assist (with braking), and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Also available is a wireless charging pad and an 11-speaker JBL audio system.

  • Power liftgate – Opens with the touch of a button and can be upgraded to a foot-activated system for even easier access.
  • 10.5-inch touchscreen – The XSE’s touchscreen provides more features, customization options, and a more prominent display for maps, apps, and info.
  • Available digital cluster – The 12.3-inch configurable instrument cluster looks right at home in the XSE.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited vs. XSE

The Limited is the most luxurious RAV4. It builds off the XLE Premium with 18-inch bright alloy wheels, side mirror puddle lamps, and bi-LED projector-style headlights.

An upgraded cabin adds heated and ventilated front seats, dark brown accents and stitching, a 2-position driver’s seat memory, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The larger 10.5-inch touchscreen comes standard in Limited, as does the 11-speaker JBL audio system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and front and rear parking sensors with braking.

Limited buyers can opt for a foot-activated power liftgate, a 360-degree Panoramic View monitor, a panoramic glass moonroof, rain-sensing wipers with de-icers, a heated steering wheel, heated rear outboard seats, and a wireless charging pad.

  • Heated and ventilated front seats – These provide year-round comfort, helping you keep warm in winter and cool and dry in summer.
  • Front and rear parking sensors with braking – These notify the driver of objects near the vehicle and can activate the brakes if necessary.
  • Available Panoramic View monitor – Provides a full 360-degree view around the vehicle, with a bird’s-eye view that can operate at low speeds and in reverse.

2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition vs. Limited

The Woodland Edition brings a bit of ruggedness to the hybrid side of the RAV4 family. Please don’t mistake this for a hybrid version of the TRD Off-Road, as it doesn’t have a heavy-duty suspension, multi-terrain modes, or torque-vectoring AWD.

The Woodland Edition begins as the XLE, adding 18-inch TRD bronze alloy wheels, Falken Wildpeak A/T tires, integrated LED fog lights, and dual black chromed-tipped exhaust.

The interior retains the cloth seats but gets a few more outdoorsy add-ons, like Woodland all-weather floor mats and cargo bay liner, plus a 120V/100W A/C power outlet in the cargo bay.

There are no option packages for the Woodland Edition.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid trim?

The RAV4 XLE Premium Hybrid delivers an excellent combination of features, pricing, and optional equipment. However, if you want a sportier look and a few more bells and whistles, the XSE or Limited is the way to go.

As for the Woodland Edition, it’s an excellent idea, but it can’t go off-roading in the way the gas-powered TRD Off Road or Adventure can, and it feels somewhat sparse with regard to features.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid get?

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is rated by the EPA at 41 mpg city/38 mpg highway/40 mpg combined.

The Woodland Edition, thanks mainly to its All-Terrain tires, is rated at 38 mpg city/35 mpg highway/37 mpg combined.

  • Which 2023 Toyota RAV4 trim offers the most safety?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the RAV4 Hybrid five out of five stars overall. At the same time, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards it a Top Safety Pick accolade.

We think all the RAV4 trims are a safe bet, but we like the added assurance afforded by a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, technologies available on the LE and standard on the XLE and higher.

Those wanting features like front and rear park assist or a 360-degree camera may have to expand their budgets, as these features only appear on more expensive trims.
