2023 Toyota Sequoia: Choosing the Right Trim

The all-new-from-the-ground-up 2023 Toyota Sequoia leans heavily on engineering from the 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Perhaps the most newsworthy nugget of information springing from the redesign is every 2023 Sequoia will employ a hybrid powertrain.

Using Toyota’s pervasive TNGA-F platform, Sequoia is a body-on-frame design with a laddered frame.

Although the Sequoia’s grille takes up less real estate than Tundra’s, its blunt face follows Tundra’s lead.

Underpinning the body and frame is an independent suspension up front with a multi-link setup in the rear. This allows incorporating the available load-leveling air suspension and the towing-inspired adaptive variable suspension.

Toyota took this opportunity to revamp its trim lineup. For 2023, the Sequoia will dress out as the SR5, Limited, Platinum, TRD Pro, and the new Capstone grades.

We fully expect the newest Sequoia to feature the latest in connection and safety technologies. That includes a huge horizontal touchscreen anchoring the center of the instrument panel.

The prices below are for the Tundra 4×2 models. Tundra 4x4s are an extra $3,000.

Power & Fuel Economy

One of the mechanicals borrowed from the 2022 Tundra is the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. However, where you can get a non-hybrid turbocharged V6 in Tundra, the hybrid powertrain is Sequoia’s sole source of thrust.

Starring as the gas-engine partner in the i-Force Max is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. Located between the V6 and the 10-speed automatic transmission is an electric motor-generator.

Together, the V6 and electric motor deliver 437 horsepower and an impressive 583 lb-ft of torque.

Something else new, the 2023 Sequoia will provide driving modes. This feature will offer Eco, Normal, and Sport in its standard form.  However, as you add suspension upgrades, the modes expand to include Comfort, Sport, and Sport S+.

You can add 4-wheel drive (4WD) to the SR5, Limited, Platinum, and Capstone grades. It is standard on the TRD Pro.

Toyota says the latest generation of Sequoia will tow up to 9,000 pounds when appropriately equipped.

According to the EPA, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia is rated at 21 mpg city/24 mpg highway/22 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 19 mpg city/22 mpg highway/20 combined with 4-wheel drive.

Those are big increases compared to the previous Sequoia, which was rated at 17 mpg combined.
