VW expands the trim-level selections for the returning 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 fully electric vehicle (EV). The Standard trim joins the lineup at the bottom end with a smaller battery and less range. The new Pro S Plus tops the trim levels now.
The grade arrangement for the 2023 ID.4 begins with the Standard and then ranges up to the Pro, Standard S, Pro S, and Pro S Plus.
The infotainment touchscreen now is the 12-inch display available as an option on last year’s ID.4. Otherwise, some new paint colors, wheel designs, and an upgraded center console pretty well sum up this year’s enhancements. Oh, and VW now builds the ID.4 in Tennessee.
All but the Standard and Standard S come with an 82-kWh battery array with 288 pouch-style cells. A 201-horsepower electric motor motivates the rear wheels (RWD). With RWD, the estimated maximum range is 275 miles.
You can add all-wheel drive (AWD) to any Pro grade for $3,800. With AWD, Volkswagen adds a second motor to the front axle, boosting the pony count to 295 and reducing the maximum estimated range to 255 miles.
Included in the price of every ID.4 are three years of 30-minute DC fast-charging sessions at any Electrify America charging station. At this writing, the ID.4 still qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit.
While not the most exciting to drive among compact EV crossovers, the ID.4 is a competent, traditionally styled 5-passenger people hauler. We appreciate its comprehensive list of technologies.
2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard
(starting at $37,495)
Last year’s bottom-rung ID.4 model was the $40,760 Pro. In a move to provide a starting price well below the $40,000 mark, Volkswagen introduced the Standard trim with a smaller 62-kWh battery. However, the smaller battery translates into a reduction in the estimated range to 208 miles. The power output remains at 201 hp.
Despite filling the ID.4’s entry-level spot in the grade lineup, the Standard is impressively equipped. It arrives with 19-inch alloy wheels and exterior LED lights (auto on-off headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights). Also standard are rain-sensing wipers, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, cloth/leatherette seating, and heated front seats.
Keeping passengers comfortable regardless of the outside temperature is dual-zone automatic climate control. Entertaining them falls to an infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 7-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth. VW has integrated wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, and four USB ports, wireless phone charging, and Wi-Fi hot spot capability also make the cut.
An auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outboard mirrors, and heated windshield-wiper nozzles come equipped, too.
Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive safety bundle leads off the ID.4’s long list of driver-aid technologies. It includes lane-keeping assist with steering, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and traffic-sign recognition. Park Assist and Travel Assist are also part of the package. The automaker supplements IQ.Drive features with high-beam assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and front/rear park assist. Blind-spot monitoring with steering and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, as well.
Volkswagen doesn’t offer any factory-installed options for the Standard.
Adding the $1,295 destination fee to the Standard base price brings the total to $38,790. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $697 per month. See 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard models for sale

Furthermore, you can set them so they automatically fold when the ignition is turned off and then fold back to their functioning position when the ignition is engaged.
