You’ll find plenty of 3-row midsize SUVs on the market, but few combine the MDX’s styling, performance, price, and unflappable reputation for reliability.
Buyers have a wide array of trims and two potent powertrains from which to choose. Acura makes choosing a trim easier by limiting options to a few standalone features while bundling the most desirable upgrades as standard equipment.
Acura’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is the choice for those who like to drive their SUVs with gusto. It’s also ideal for tackling snow-covered roads or dusty back trails.
Towing for the front-drive models is 3,500 pounds, but adding SH-AWD bumps it to 5,000 pounds.
Hot on the MDX’s heels are competitors such as the Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Aviator, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Genesis GV80, Audi Q7, and Lexus RX.
Prices provided are new car MSRP at the time of publishing.

2024 Acura MDX: $49,850 (FWD), $52,050 (AWD)
The entry-level MDX is a front-drive model with the option to upgrade to Acura’s SH-AWD. A 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine and 10-speed transmission operate smoothly, returning adequate performance and fuel economy.
Keeping with the MDX’s performance image, Acura includes the Integrated Dynamics System, which features various driver-selectable settings regulating steering feedback, shift points, and throttle response. Drivers can choose from five modes: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Snow, and Individual.
Knowing that a 3-row SUV is likely carrying precious cargo, Acura equips the MDX with a phalanx of safety and driver-assist systems.
Housed under the AcuraWatch umbrella, the MDX features standard forward collision warning and collision mitigation braking with pedestrian detection. It also features lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow. Traffic Jam Assist can steer the vehicle in low-speed stop-and-go situations with minimal driver intervention.
The safety tech doesn’t stop there. You’ll get a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic detection, traffic sign recognition, and a road departure mitigation system to warn when the vehicle drifts from its lane.
Rounding out the safety equipment list is a rear backup camera with a built-in lens washer, hill start assist, and a tire pressure monitor that lets you know when you’ve reached the recommended pressure when adding air to your tires.
Moving to the exterior reveals Acura’s Jewel Eye LED headlights, a panoramic power moonroof, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a power liftgate. Did we mention this is the entry-level trim?
It doesn’t stop there. You’ll also find wiper-activated auto on/off headlights, side mirrors that tilt down when the MDX is placed in reverse, remote operation of the windows and moonroof, and a proximity keyless entry system that lets you unlock and start the car without having to remove the key fob from your purse or pocket.
The MDX’s interior is even more impressive, with a versatile set of seats covered in imitation leather. The driver and front passenger get heated 12-way power-adjustable seats with power lumbar support. In contrast, the driver’s seat features a 3-position memory setting, including the mirrors, steering wheel position, and mirrors.
The second-row bench seat features a removable center section that, when not in place, effectively creates a captain’s chair configuration with a walk-through pass to the rear seat. The MDX can carry seven people with the 50/50-split folding third-row seat occupied.
Amenities include tri-zone automatic climate control (although we should note the third-row section does not include air vents), a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and first-row ambient LED lighting.
The MDX’s infotainment system is a mixed bag. While we love the big 12.3-inch color display, it’s not a touchscreen. Instead, a console-mounted touchpad operates the various screen functions, with your finger’s position on the pad corresponding to tiles on the screen. It’s a system that takes some getting used to. Thankfully, there’s also natural voice recognition software that can manage many features.
The MDX infotainment bundle includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, AcuraLink service apps, and Alexa Built-in. A 9-speaker audio system comes standard, as does a wireless charging pad and multiple USB-A and USB-C charge ports in the first and second rows.
The MDX features a tire repair kit, but opting for the SH-AWD upgrades to a compact spare tire.
The MDX offers several accessories, including various roof-mounted carriers, a hands-free power liftgate, a remote start, 20-inch wheel packages, LED fog lights, a heated flat-bottom sport steering wheel, a trailer hitch, and more.
