The compact 2024 BMW 2 Series takes us back to BMW’s early days when small, light, and fun-to-drive coupes were all the rage. The 2 Series is BMW’s most affordable car, offering coupe and 4-door “Gran Coupe” body styles.
Buyers can opt for rear- or all-wheel drive, with varying degrees of power and performance. Purists with deep pockets will likely gravitate to the M2, which touts a 453-horsepower turbocharged engine and is the only 2 Series to offer a 6-speed manual transmission.
Challengers to the 2 Series include the Audi A3/S3, VW Golf R, and Acura Integra Type S.

2024 BMW 228i Gran Coupe: $38,400 (sDrive RWD), $40,400 (xDrive AWD)
The most affordable 2 Series is the 228i Gran Coupe, powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 228 hp. It comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission routing power to either the rear wheels (228i sDrive) or all four wheels (228i xDrive).
In a nod to the 228i’s performance intentions, BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control adjusts throttle, shift mapping, suspension, and steering feedback with Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport modes.
The 4-door 228i Gran Coupe comes nicely equipped, although BMW bundles its best features into numerous option packages and standalone items.
The 228i’s exterior looks old-school BMW, with clean, simple lines and a right-sized twin-kidney grille. Details include handsome 17-inch double-spoke alloy wheels with run-flat tires, power-folding heated side mirrors with driver’s side auto-dimming, and rain-sensing wipers.
The 228i Gran Coupe features auto on/off LED headlights, remote keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Safety is big at BMW, so it should come as no surprise the 228i Gran Coupe features standard forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a blind-spot monitor. Also included are rear cross-traffic alert and speed limit recognition.
Moving to the interior, we find a push-button start, the Live Cockpit Plus configurable digital instrument cluster, a leather-wrapped 3-spoke tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and SensaTec faux leather upholstery.
Both front sport seats are power-operated and feature power side bolsters, with the driver getting memory settings for the seat and mirrors. A 40/20/40-split folding rear seat allows for more cargo space when needed.
Additional amenities include cruise control, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, one-touch up/down power windows, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
Infotainment duties are covered by an 8.8-inch touchscreen that can also be controlled by voice or via the iDrive rotary controller. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, BMW connected apps, a USB-C input, and navigation. A 205-watt 10-speaker audio system brings it all to life.
A few desirable option packages and individual options are available for the 228i. The M Sport Package adds a sportier appearance with an aerodynamic body kit, Shadowline exterior trim, 18-inch M wheels, M Sport suspension, and an M steering wheel. If you want to improve performance further, the M Sport with Dynamic Handling Package adds dynamic damper control and M Sport brakes with blue calipers.
Offering more premium features, the Convenience Package adds Comfort Access keyless entry, power lumbar support, a wireless charging pad, and a panoramic power moonroof.
The Premium Package complements the contents of the Convenience Package with a universal garage door opener, a heated steering wheel, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats, and ambient lighting.

The BMW 230i Coupe has a different body and powertrain than the 228i Gran Coupe. It has a 2-door body and a different tuning of the same 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In the 230i, the drivetrain produces 255 hp, and the Driving Dynamics Control adds a Sport+ mode. The Coupe also gains launch control for better performance when accelerating from a standing stop.
The coupe rides on 18-inch wheels and features Shadowline exterior trim. Oddly, automatic high-beam headlights are no longer standard and are only available when purchasing the Convenience Package.
BMW’s Curved Display now comes standard on all 2 Series coupes. This massive display incorporates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. The upgraded infotainment system includes over-the-air updates, cloud-based navigation, and the iDrive8 operating system.

The M235i Gran Coupe is more than just an engine upgrade over the 228i Gran Coupe. It also features an M Sport differential, variable sport steering, an adaptive M suspension, and M Sport brakes. You also get ambient interior lighting, Dakota leather upholstery, power lumbar support, and Comfort Access proximity keyless entry.
An available M Performance Package adds aesthetic upgrades with a few different wheel options and extended Shadowline trim. A slightly less robust Premium Package adds a 10.25-inch infotainment system, a head-up display, adaptive headlights, heated front seats, a wireless charging pad, a heated steering wheel, and a universal garage door opener.

The 2024 BMW M240i Coupe sits near the top of the 2 Series model range. The turbocharged 6-cylinder engine cranks out 382 hp and returns up to 26 combined mpg.
The M240i Coupe is similar to the M235i Gran Coupe in standard and available comfort and convenience features. The apparent differences are the body and what lies under the hood. Also, unlike the M235i, AWD is optional on the M240i, while RWD is standard.
The M240i includes SensaTec upholstery (leather is optional), a power moonroof, BMW Digital Key (lets you use your phone like a key), ambient interior lighting, and adjustable illuminated trim.
The Cooling and High-Performance Tire Package is available exclusively for the M240i Coupe. It adds high-performance run-flat tires, a more powerful cooling fan, and an additional engine oil cooler.
Another M240i upgrade is the Parking Assistance Package, which adds a parking assistant (that can automatically parallel park the car) and a 360-degree Surround View Monitor.

The M2 features an M-tuned sport exhaust with quad tailpipes, a track-ready cooling system, an M Drive Professional onboard performance analyzer, and lightweight front and rear subframes.
The M treatment also applies to the suspension, brakes, steering, traction, and stability control.
With the M2, you’ll get staggered 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels, a power tilt/telescopic M steering wheel, M Sport seats with power side bolsters and 4-way power lumbar support, Vernasca leather upholstery, a power moonroof, and a Harmon Kardon audio system.
A Carbon Package adds carbon-fiber trim, while the Light Package adds adaptive LED headlights and automatic high beams. M compound brakes with red calipers improve stopping power.
