After years of experimenting with the quirky i3 hatchback and exotic i8 sports car, BMW has come out with the i4, a conventional BMW sedan that just happens to be all-electric. The 2024 BMW i4 does an excellent job electrifying the brand’s defining personality traits of luxury, performance, and technology while retaining the practicality of a compact sedan.
The BMW i4 primarily competes with the Tesla Model 3 and Mercedes-EQ EQE Sedan. The BMW sits right between the two in terms of size and price. If you think the Tesla is too small and the Mercedes is too expensive, the BMW i4 is just right.

What’s New:
The xDrive40 model joins the lineup as the entry-level dual-motor i4.
Our Recommendation:
We like the i4 models with “40” in their names. The eDrive40 trim is in a sweet spot of luxury, performance, and value. The xDrive40 adds all-wheel drive (AWD) and further upgrades to the steering and suspension. The best part? They both have a range of more than 300 miles on a full charge.

The base eDrive35 has a single-motor powertrain and rear-wheel drive. It produces 282 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and boasts a 256-mile range. BMW estimates a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds.
Standard features on the 2024 BMW i4 eDrive35 include 18-inch wheels, a power moonroof, LED headlights, perforated SensaTec upholstery, an Anthracite headliner, 3-zone climate control, a universal garage door opener, and multicolor ambient lighting.
The BMW Curved Display seamlessly combines a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch screen for the iDrive 8 infotainment system. Standard infotainment features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, and navigation.
The standard Active Driving Assistant safety tech suite bundles frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and speed limit info. Front and rear parking sensors also come standard.
Our favorite option package for the i4 is the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700). This upgrades the safety tech to the Active Driving Assistant Pro system, which bundles full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, traffic jam assistant, evasion aid, and front cross-traffic alert. Add the Parking Assistance Professional Package ($700) with Parking Assistant Plus, Active Park Distance Control, and a surround-view 3D camera for even more safety tech.
The M Sport Package ($3,100) adds a sporty appearance package with an aerodynamic body kit, 19-inch M wheels, Shadowline exterior trim, and an M steering wheel. You also get adaptive M suspension and variable sport steering. There’s also a Shadowline Package ($950) that adds dark Shadowline exterior trim.
The more affordable Dynamic Handling Package ($1,400) doesn’t have the cool appearance package, but it does include adaptive M suspension, variable sport steering, and 19-inch bi-color gunmetal grey wheels.
If you want to make the i4 a more luxurious sedan, you can add the Convenience Package ($900) with heated front seats with lumbar support, a wireless charging pad, and Iconic Sounds Electric, which creates a range of sounds that enhance the drive. There’s also a Premium Package ($1,900), adding the contents of the Convenience Package plus a heated steering wheel, Harman Kardon audio, wireless charging, and a head-up display. Heated rear seats are available with the Premium Package for an extra $350.
Individual options include Veransca synthetic leather upholstery ($1,500), M Sport brakes ($650), adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight ($1,000), Harman Kardon premium audio ($875), heated front seats ($500), ventilated front seats ($350), a heated steering wheel ($200), and more.
Alpine White and Jet Black are the only no-cost paint options. Premium paints range from $650 to $3,600.
