The model range of the BMW X3 is divided primarily by powertrains. The sDrive30i is a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) model with a 248-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, and the xDrive30i model adds all-wheel drive (AWD). The sportier BMW X3 M40i turns up the performance wick with a 382-hp turbo 6-cylinder, while the almighty X3 M is tuned to produce 503 hp.

2024 BMW X3 sDrive30i: $46,900
The base sDrive30i trim is the only variant of the BMW X3 with rear-wheel drive. Every other model has the xDrive AWD system. That means this X3 is the most fuel-efficient model, returning EPA combined fuel economy of 25 mpg. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine under the hood is rated at 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
Standard features in the base 2024 BMW X3 are pretty generous. It comes with 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, satin aluminum exterior trim, and a power liftgate. Inside, you’ll find SensaTec faux leather upholstery, a memory driver’s seat, an Anthracite headliner, dark oak wood interior trim, dual-zone climate control, a universal garage door opener, and multicolor ambient lighting.
The standard iDrive 7.0 infotainment system has a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a touchpad controller, navigation, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and two USB ports. You also get the Live Cockpit Plus, BMW’s 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
The X3 comes standard with some nice safety features, too. The Active Driving Assistant feature bundles frontal collision warning, active blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning, and speed limit info. The features also include front and rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, and an anti-theft alarm.
A few desirable option packages add to the appeal of the X3 (for a price). One of the most popular is the M Sport Package ($2,150), primarily an appearance package. It adds an aerodynamic body kit, unique wheels, and extra options for wheels ranging from $600 to $1,550. The package also includes Shadowline exterior trim, aluminum interior trim, and an M steering wheel.
If you want to improve driving performance, consider the Dynamic Handling Package. This $1,400 package adds Dynamic Damper Control, M Sport brakes with blue or red calipers, and variable sport steering.
We recommend the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700). For a modest price, you get the convenience and safety of full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, extended traffic jam assistant, evasion aid, and front cross-traffic alert. You might also add the Parking Assistance Package ($700), which includes active park distance control and a surround-view 3D camera.
A Premium Package ($3,550) turns the 2024 X3 sDrive30i into a more luxurious SUV. It adds a heated steering wheel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Comfort Access keyless entry, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, lumbar support, a head-up display, and Live Cockpit Pro with navigation capabilities. Heated rear seats are available as an add-on for an extra $500. You can also add the $1,700 Convenience Package, which adds just the panoramic moonroof, lumbar support, and Comfort Access.
BMW offers the Shadowline Package for those seeking an X3 with a darker aesthetic. For $400, you get black body trim and darker chrome behind the headlights.
If you want only a few of these options without committing to a whole option package, there are several individual parts you can add piecemeal to the X3. 2024 BMW X3 M40i: $61,900
The main reason to upgrade to the BMW X3 M40i is performance. It’s powered by a turbocharged 6-cylinder engine producing 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. That’s a significant boost in power compared to the 30i models, making this a worthwhile upgrade for enthusiasts craving strong performance in a compact luxury SUV.
The contents of the M Sport Package and Dynamic Handling Package available on the 4-cylinder models come standard on the M40i. Other standard features include adaptive M suspension, a panoramic moonroof, a 12.3-inch screen for the iDrive infotainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a SensaTec dashboard. (Sensatec is BMW’s synthetic leather.)
The M40i model offers many of the same packages and individual options as the 30i models. Some differences include a few unique wheel options, an M Sport differential ($1,300), a Shadowline package ($400), carbon-fiber interior trim ($300), and a lower cost for the Premium Package ($1,350) since some of its contents already come standard on the M40i.

The X3 M has a sporty appearance package like that of the M40i, but with a few unique aesthetic touches. It also comes standard with an M Sport differential, Dynamic Damper Control, adaptive LED headlights, Vernasca leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
If you’re serious about your performance, get the Competition Package. At $7,000, it’s not inexpensive, but it does include a lot: unique 21-inch wheels, an M Sport exhaust system, M Sport seats, M seat belts, extended Shadowline trim, and extended Merino leather (a $1,000 standalone option). Most significantly, the performance is turned up to a whopping 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque with the Competition Package.
An Executive Package ($3,650) upgrades the X3 with a panoramic moonroof, a heated steering wheel, rear side-window sunshades, rear heated seats, a head-up display, Parking Assistant Plus, and gesture control.
The Driving Assistance Professional Package is still a $1,700 option on the X3 M.
