2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: Choosing the Right Trim

Hyundai has made some significant midcycle enhancements to the 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, making this midsize sedan even more attractive. More about that in a bit. For 2024, Hyundai has axed the entry-level Blue trim level, leaving the higher-priced SEL as the new base model. Despite a higher buy-in price,  the 2024 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid remains a good value among midsize hybrid sedans.

The SEL and the Limited create thrust with a powertrain consisting of a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated with a 39-kilowatt electric motor. The combined output is 192 horsepower. A 6-speed automatic transmission hustles power to the front wheels. According to the EPA, last year’s Sonata was rated at 47 mpg in combined city-and-highway driving.

We were already big fans of the Sonata Hybrid, particularly its passenger comfort, ample technology, and generous warranty coverage, especially its industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. While none of that has changed, the 2024 redesign elevates the Sonata Hybrid closer to luxury status.

Hyundai also offers a Sonata fueled only by gasoline. It is detailed separately.

What’s New:

The entry-level Blue grade had been dropped. The most obvious enhancement for 2024 is a redesigned front end with a new bumper, headlights, and what Hyundai calls a “seamless horizon” front light bar that stretches around the front edge of the redesigned hood. Also getting the update treatment are the rear bumper and taillights. Inside, a new panoramic curved display contains a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster/driver-information center and a 12.3-inch information touchscreen. Hyundai also moved the twist-style shifter to the steering column, freeing up space on the center console.

Our Recommendation:

For the $6,400 price difference, we’d stick with the SEL. The two trims share the same powertrain, range, and fuel economy. The Limited does add a few frills, like a panoramic sunroof, leather seating, and a head-up display; however, the SEL is well-stocked with technology and convenience features.

Let’s see how the SEL and Limited trims stack up.

The Bluelink+ Connected Car System offers a suite of services to keep the Sonata and driver in good hands, from routine maintenance to emergency assistance. It’s complimentary to the original owner for life.

Among the bundle of advanced safety tech are Safe Exit Assist (warns exiting passengers of danger from approaching traffic), lane-following assist (helps the Sonata Hybrid stay centered in its lane by following the path markers ahead of the vehicle), and lane-keeping assist (monitors lane markings to keep the car centered).

Other advanced systems include automatic forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert with emergency braking. Junction-turning assist issues a warning and brakes if you attempt to make a dangerous left-hand turn across the bow of oncoming traffic.

  1. Got my 2024 hybrid limited last week. Really needs power folding mirrors along with a heated rear seat. Other than that it has been fantastic so far.
