2024 Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 Kia Sorento Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) offers accommodations for six and a superior 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Power comes from a 1.6-liter turbocharged gas engine paired with an electric motor sending power to all four wheels (AWD). However, unlike the Sorento Hybrid, the PHEV can travel up to 32 miles solely on electric power, allowing it to make short trips without burning a drop of gas.

The Sorento PHEV is offered in one well-equipped trim: the SX Prestige. At nearly $50,000, one must consider the gas savings versus the nearly $7,500 premium over the Sorento Hybrid SX Prestige.

The only other 3-row PHEV in this segment is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Although the Mitsu doesn’t offer nearly the range or fuel economy, it does have a similarly long powertrain warranty.

Note: Look for an updated Sorento Hybrid to arrive for 2025, one that sports the new styling of the 2024 Sorento with the non-hybrid powertrain.

2024 Kia Sorento SX Prestige: $49,990

Kia makes it easy to pick the right trim, as it only offers the Sorento PHEV in SX Prestige form. That means you get every available Sorento feature, including a wealth of luxury, technology, and safety systems.

The SX Prestige features torque-vectoring all-wheel drive with a locking center differential along with its plug-in hybrid powertrain. Torque vectoring is an electronic system that monitors road surface conditions and driver input. If necessary, it will apply brake force to the inside wheels to keep the Sorento PHEV on its intended cornering line.

Kia’s Drive Mode Select allows the driver to choose the following modes (that control the throttle sensitivity, steering effort, and transmission shift points): Eco, Sport, Comfort, Smart, Custom, and Snow.

On the safety front, you’ll get a forward collision-avoidance system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, plus Junction Turning, which helps prevent potential collisions at intersections when turning across oncoming traffic. Blind-spot collision avoidance and a rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking are also standard, as are lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist.

Additional aids include Kia’s semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist system and the super handy Blind-Spot View Monitor. Remote Smart Park Assist allows remote parking of your Sorento PHEV (or exiting a particularly tight parking spot) while standing outside the vehicle with key fob in hand.

We are big fans of the Sorento’s overhead surround-view monitor (which improves parking lot and driveway safety) and its navigation-based adaptive cruise control system, which knows when curves are coming up on the highway and will moderate vehicle speed if necessary.

Wrapping up the safety systems are Safe Exit Assist (prevents passengers from exiting the vehicle when detecting approaching traffic from behind) and Rear Occupant Alert with ultrasonic sensors.

A tour around the SX Prestige exterior reveals 19-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free “Smart” power liftgate (stand behind it with the key fob in hand, and the liftgate automatically opens), Smart Key proximity keyless entry, auto on/off LED projector headlights with automatic high beams, LED fog lights, and rain-sensing wipers.

The SX Prestige boasts heated power-folding side mirrors, a gloss-black rear spoiler, low-profile roof rails, and a panoramic glass sunroof with a power sunshade.

The cabin features three rows of seating with second-row captain’s chairs that limit total occupancy to six people. A multitalented 12.3-inch configurable digital LCD instrument cluster has screens for a Blind-Spot View Monitor that displays on the instrument panel an image of your rear-quarter blind spots whenever you signal to change lanes.

Further SX Prestige features include perforated leather upholstery and a 14-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar, memory settings, and power thigh extension. The front seats are heated and ventilated, the steering wheel and second-row seats are heated, and the front passenger gets a 10-way power seat with 2-way power lumbar support.

Additionally, there’s a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio, Bluetooth, and cruise control buttons, plus a dual-zone automatic climate control (with rear air vents), a smartphone-compatible wireless charging pad, a 4.2-inch trip computer display, and push-button start.

Thoughtful little details include one-touch auto up/down power windows, dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors, and a rotary gear selector in place of the traditional shift lever found in the non-hybrid Sorento models.

Wrapped into the SX’s extensive infotainment system is a 10.25-inch color touchscreen with built-in GPS navigation, natural voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, HD Radio, and Kia Connect remote connectivity via your smartphone. Kia Connect is a smartphone-based app that remotely starts the vehicle, sets the interior climate, and even locates the vehicle in a crowded parking lot.

A 12-speaker Bose audio system brings the whole setup to life. It’s complemented by no fewer than eight USB ports, including a front console USB data port and two USB charging ports, three USB charging ports in the second row, two additional USB charging ports in the third row, and a 115-volt inverter outlet in the cargo bay.

With the $1,325 destination charge, the 2024 Kia Sorento PHEV SX Prestige costs $51,315. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $968. See the 2024 Kia Sorento PHEV SX Prestige for sale near you
