The 2024 Subaru Ascent is a 3-row, 8-passenger SUV brimming with Subaru safety features like the EyeSight driver-assist system. Early reliability issues on the first-year models seem to have been addressed, helping the Ascent rise to the level of quality and reliability expected of the brand.
That said, plenty of 3-row competitors vie for your attention; chief among them are the new Toyota Grand Highlander, Kia Telluride, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and GMC Acadia.
What makes the Ascent unique is its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, a feature that doesn’t seem to harm its fuel economy figures much yet gives it superior year-round traction on wet or dry pavement.
Every Ascent comes with a 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine. While this flat-4 engine is not the most powerful in the class, it’s more than sufficient for most needs.

2024 Subaru Ascent: $34,195
The entry-level Subaru Ascent Base offers essential safety and comfort features at a low price. However, it lacks optional upgrades and provides a somewhat muted color palette. Still, it’s a pretty good deal for those needing only the bare minimum.
Along with its turbocharged engine and standard all-wheel drive (AWD), the Ascent includes X-Mode, an enhanced AWD system providing better traction in low-speed situations, such as when traversing snow-covered roads. Hill descent control is also included, helping the vehicle descend steep hills without needing to apply the brakes constantly.
Trailer Stability Assist helps the Ascent reduce trailer sway when towing.
As safety is critical to most families, Subaru equips the Ascent with its latest EyeSight Driver Assist suite.
The package includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane-centering, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
Other driver aids include automatic high-beam headlights, a rear backup camera with a washer, a tire pressure monitor, and Rear Seat Reminder that tells the driver to check the back seat for children or pets before exiting the vehicle. Auto vehicle hold keeps the vehicle in place when stopped without the driver needing to use the brake pedal.

The Premium trim adds a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic detection, and automatic emergency steering to help steer the vehicle away from a potential collision.
Other Premium features include deep-tinted rear privacy glass, independent second-row climate controls, an 8-way power driver’s seat (but no power lumbar support), and leather wrapping for the steering wheel and shift knob.
Heated front seats, heated side mirrors, and windshield wiper de-icers are also equipped. The rearmost seats gain reading lights with one-touch interior illumination. Other Premium upgrades include color-keyed side mirrors with integrated turn signals, chrome door handles, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.
