2024 Subaru WRX: Choosing the Right Trim

Where some manufacturers are abandoning the performance car platforms altogether, Subaru proudly expands its role, adding another trim level to its popular 2024 WRX sedan.

Joining the base WRX, Premium, Limited, and GT is the new TR, a trim designed to appeal to enthusiast drivers who like lots of performance upgrades. Each WRX trim offers a different theme, but all are backed by a potent 271-horsepower turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer engine and standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD). A 6-speed manual is standard on all but the GT trim, which is an automatic-only affair. Similarly, the base WRX no longer offers an automatic transmission option.

Vying for your hard-earned dollars are the Volkswagen GTI and Hyundai Elantra N, neither offering AWD. On the other hand, the Toyota GR Corolla is priced in line with the WRX and comes standard with AWD. The VW Golf R and Audi S3 also come standard with AWD but have starting prices rivaling a fully loaded WRX GT.

Prices are current at the time of publishing.

What’s New:

The 2024 Subaru WRX sees some significant upgrades, starting with the new TR trim. The TR is aimed at enthusiast buyers who usually do their own upgrades but don’t mind if Subaru beats them to the punch. The TR adds Brembo brakes, stiffer springs, a revised steering rack, and 19-inch alloy wheels wearing Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer tires.

All WRX models now come standard with the EyeSight driver-assistance suite, including the models equipped with the manual transmission. Subaru’s 11-inch tablet-style infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is now standard on all trims.

Our Recommendation:

If you’re on a tight budget, we’d pick the Premium trim for its additional features, like the Cold Weather Package and available Harman Kardon audio. Our favorite 2024 Subaru WRX is the Limited, which offers a manual transmission and plenty of cool features.

2024 Subaru WRX: $32,735

The base WRX comes only with a 6-speed manual transmission and Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD. So equipped, the WRX possesses a less sophisticated viscous-coupling mechanical AWD setup that some drivers find more fun as it splits torque evenly between the front and rear wheels. Additional performance equipment includes a high-flow exhaust, a sport suspension, active torque vectoring, Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control with Trac Mode, and incline start assist.

For the first time, Subaru equips the manual transmission WRX with its EyeSight driver-assist suite, which includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with lane centering, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and lead vehicle start alert.

The WRX rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels and features wiper-activated automatic on/off LED headlights with automatic high beams, power mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, remote keyless entry, and a rearview monitor.

The WRX’s interior is basic but functional, with manually adjustable sport front seats, a leather-wrapped flat-bottom tilt/telescoping steering wheel, one-touch up/down front power windows, cruise control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and single-zone automatic climate control.

Subaru’s 11.6-inch Starlink infotainment touchscreen is new to the base model, which brings along wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You’ll also get an AM/FM radio with six speakers, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth, and Subaru cloud-based apps. The system also accepts voice commands for controlling the audio and climate controls.

The WRX’s climate controls are integrated into the touchscreen’s bottom half.

With the $1,120 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru WRX costs $33,855. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment works out to $639. See 2024 Subaru WRX models for sale near you

2024 Subaru WRX includes:

6-speed manual – The WRX’s manual transmission makes it a true enthusiast’s car, giving the driver complete control of gear selection.

Trac Mode –  By shutting off traction control, Trac Mode makes it easier to drift and slide, which is half the fun when running the WRX hard on an enclosed track.

Adaptive cruise control – An advanced cruise control system keeps the WRX safe from the car ahead and can change speeds as traffic patterns change.

2024 Subaru WRX Premium: $34,635 (manual); $35,985 (automatic)

The Premium trim builds off the base, adding more features we think buyers want in a modern performance sedan.

Opting for the Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) automatic brings one additional driver-assist feature: pre-collision throttle management, which can automatically cut engine power if the car senses a stopped or rapidly slowing car. This gives the driver more time to apply the brakes.

Checking the box for the automatic deletes the auto-dimming rearview mirror and incline start assist but adds auto-vehicle hold, steering-wheel paddle shifters, SI-Drive modes, and an electronic parking brake. You’ll also get an external oil cooler, rear center console storage box lid, and USB-A and USB-C charge ports in the rear console.

The Premium adds 18-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, and a low-profile rear spoiler.

The standard All-Weather Package adds heated side mirrors, 3-mode heated front seats, and windshield wiper de-icers.

Subaru’s Keyless Access key fob telegraphs your proximity to the car. With the key fob in a purse or pocket, one only needs to touch the door handle to unlock the WRX. Once inside, the same fob enables the push-button starter. The system also includes a PIN code if you can’t take your fob with you and need to lock it inside the car (think surfing, hiking, or skiing).

Premium amenities include one-touch up/down windows on all four doors, dual-zone automatic climate control, aluminum pedals, and a front console USB-C input/charge port.

The Premium’s Multimedia Plus system upgrades with Starlink Safety and Security services.

An optional package adds a power moonroof and a 504-watt, 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

With the $1,120 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru WRX Premium costs $35,755. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment works out to about $675. See 2024 Subaru WRX Premium models for sale near you

2024 Subaru WRX Premium includes:

LED fog lights – Bright LED fog lights better illuminate the road when driving in dense fog or heavy rain.

11.6-inch display – The Premium’s 11.6-inch touchscreen puts controls at your fingertips and provides a massive display for viewing apps and maps via wireless Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

All-Weather Package – Heated seats are a nice touch, but it’s nicer to have heated side mirrors and front wiper de-icers when driving in winter.

2024 Subaru WRX Limited: $39,015 (manual); $40,565 (automatic)

The Limited brings more luxury to the WRX, furnishing things like a 10-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support,  the 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and built-in GPS navigation.

The Limited gains steering-responsive LED headlights, a blind-spot monitor with lane change assists, rear cross-traffic detection, and a power moonroof.

The Limited’s seats are upholstered in Ultrasuede and simulated leather, highlighted by red stitching on the seats, door panels, and dash.

Opting for the automatic transmission brings all the same equipment as found on the Premium trim with the automatic, plus reverse automatic emergency braking.

With the $1,120 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru WRX Limited costs $40,135. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment works out to approximately $757. See 2024 Subaru WRX Limited models for sale near you

2024 Subaru WRX Limited includes:

10-way power driver’s seat – Although it has the same thick side bolsters as the Premium’s seats, the Limited’s power driver seat affords more opportunities to find the perfect seating position. And its power lumbar support helps lessen lower back fatigue.

Harman Kardon audio – The 11-speaker Harman Kardon system delivers superior sound compared to the stock system, with a 504-watt amplifier and powered subwoofer for optimal highs and lows.

Reverse automatic braking – Available when ordering the automatic transmission, this system warns of objects behind the vehicle when backing up. It can even activate the brakes to help avoid a collision.

2024 Subaru WRX TR: $41,655

The TR builds off the Limited, equipping the performance upgrades WRX owners might generally add.

Offered exclusively with the manual transmission, the TR has 6-piston Brembo front brake calipers (2-piston in the rear), larger brake pads and rotors, and a beefed-up master cylinder.

It also gets performance springs with stiffer damping rates, a retuned steering rack, and 19-inch alloy wheels wearing Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer tires.

Moving to the TR cabin, we find Recaro front seats in black and gray Ultrasuede with contrasting red stitching. The TR also sports an Ultrasuede dash panel.

The Limited’s moonroof is deleted, which helps reduce weight and improve body rigidity. Due to the Recaro seats, the driver’s seat loses the Limited’s power lumbar support.

With the $1,120 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru WRX TR costs $42,775. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment works out to approximately $807. See 2024 Subaru WRX TR models for sale near you

2024 Subaru WRX GT: $44,215

The GT is a head-scratcher. It is the best-equipped WRX, featuring upscale enhancements such as the Recaro sport seats, electronically controlled shock dampers, and configurable Drive Mode Select settings for the steering, throttle, and shocks.

Yet, for all its performance aspirations, the GT lacks the option of a 6-speed manual, leaving the automatic as the only transmission choice. As a paddle-shifting continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) goes, it’s sporty but not as engaging as a traditional manual.

Beyond the upgrades mentioned above, the GT shares the same equipment as the Limited with the automatic transmission.

With the $1,120 destination charge, the 2024 Subaru WRX GT costs $45,335. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment works out to about $856. See 2024 Subaru WRX GT models for sale near you

2024 Subaru WRX GT includes:

Recaro seats – Performance seats by Recaro hold occupants firmly in place during aggressive driving. They also look fantastic.

Electronic dampers – Adjustable shock absorbers feature Comfort, Normal, and Sport settings.

Selectable drive modes – The Drive Mode Select system allows up to 430 customization options affecting the steering feel, electronic shock absorbers, and SI-Drive shift points.
