We strongly suspect the current Toyota 4Runner is in its last year, to be replaced in 2025 by an all-new model that will retain its rugged body-on-frame construction while being more fuel-efficient but still maintaining excellent durability and a nose for off-road adventuring.
So, if you like the current 4Runner — unchanged for the better part of a decade — it may be time to pull the trigger on one of these classic midsize SUVs, which continues to be powered by a trusted (albeit thirsty) 4.0-liter V6 that sends 270 horsepower to the rear (RWD) — or all four (4WD) — wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission.
While it’s no surprise that this old-school SUV is practically unchanged for 2024, that’s precisely why people like the 4Runner. And why it continues to sell so well year after year. They know what they’re getting — a trusty workhorse that wins you over with its capabilities, not necessarily its up-to-date technologies.
If you order your 4Runner as a 4×4 (and you should), add $1,875 to the price. The TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and TRD Pro come standard as 4×4 models.
Competitors for the 2024 Toyota 4Runner include the 4-door Jeep Wrangler and the 4-door Ford Bronco. Neither of these body-on-frame SUVs is available with an optional third-row seat, which raises the seating capacity of the 2024 Toyota 4Runner to seven.

What’s New:
The 4Runner is largely unchanged for 2024, aside from two new colors. One, called Underground, is a dark gray. The other, Terra, is a brownish orange available exclusively on the TRD Pro model.
In other news, all trim levels now come equipped with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, two of our favorite safety technologies.
In case you were wondering, Toyota has stopped building the retro-striped 40th Anniversary 4Runner, the limited-edition one-year special based on the SR5 Premium.
Our Recommendation:
The 4Runner shines most when it’s off the road, so the model that appeals most to us is the TRD Off-Road. For less than $45,000, you get a highly capable off-roader with a locking rear differential, additional skid plate protection, and the Multi-Terrain Select off-road driving modes.

2024 Toyota 4Runner SR5: $40,455
As an entry-level model, the SR5 carries on as the most affordable way to join the 4Runner family. Like all the 4Runner trim levels, the SR5 employs a 4.0-liter V6 engine that sends 270 horsepower to the rear wheels via a 5-speed automatic transmission. If you want part-time 4WD — a rugged system with a dual-range transfer case — it will cost you an extra $1,875. If you want a third-row seat (bumping the seating capacity to seven), it’s available as a $1,365 option.
Although it’s old school, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner SR5 comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), a modern safety suite boasting lots of good technology. This includes a forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with sway warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and adaptive cruise control. Also included are a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, plus eight airbags, a rear backup camera, and a system that reminds the driver to check the back seat before exiting the vehicle. The SR5 also comes with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which keeps the distance constant to the vehicle in front of you on the freeway, slowing or accelerating as needed.
Other standard fare on the 4Runner SR5 includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and fog lights, power heated side mirrors, windshield wiper de-icers, and Smart Key, which lets you unlock the doors simply by touching the handle.
Among the SR5’s standard exterior features are a front skid plate, roof rails, rear privacy glass, and one of our favorite traditional 4Runner features: a rear liftgate with power-retractable glass.
The interior of the SR5 features cloth upholstery, a power driver’s seat (with lumbar), power windows, manual air conditioning, and a second-row bench seat that folds flat. Add a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a multi-information display, two 12-volt outlets (one up front and one in the cargo bay), and one 120-volt outlet in the cargo bay.
On the entertainment front, the SR5 features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and access to Toyota Connected Services. The system includes Bluetooth, voice control, and a Wi-Fi hot spot (subscription required).
Optional upgrades on the 2024 Toyota 4Runner SR5 include running boards ($345), a sliding rear cargo deck ($350), and a 50/50-split folding third-row seat ($1,365). Buyers who order a third-row seat cannot equip their SR5 with the sliding cargo tray.

Helping on-road performance the most is Toyota’s X-REAS sport suspension. By constantly adjusting the cross-linked shock damping at each wheel, the 4Runner TRD Sport manages to ride comfortably while maintaining good chassis composure when driven aggressively on twisty roads.
Inside, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport is distinguished by its SofTex (faux leather) upholstery, TRD floor mats, and a TRD shift knob.

Toyota Racing Development, the TRD in this model’s name, is an in-house tuner charged with raising the performance capabilities of Toyota’s cars, trucks, and SUVs, typically by upgrading suspension, engine, and exhaust hardware.
Standard features on the 2024 4Runner TRD Off-Road, which comes exclusively as a 4×4 model, include a locking rear differential, 9.6 inches of ground clearance (versus 9 inches on the base 4Runner), 17-inch alloy wheels, and a protective skid plate for the transfer case.
Also optional is the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System ($1,750). KDDS uses advanced hydraulic controls to automatically modulate the front and rear anti-roll bars’ range of motion. In short, you get better wheel articulation when off-roading but improved chassis control when driving on pavement.
Besides the standard 4WD system, the TRD Off-Road model gets Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select driving modes: Rock, Rock/Dirt, Mogul, Loose Rock, and Mud/Sand. For the record, Crawl Control keeps the 4Runner moving at super-slow speeds in tough conditions by selectively applying power to each wheel as needed.

It can be argued that the most luxurious Toyota 4Runner is the most capable, thanks to its available full-time 4WD system featuring a Torsen limited-slip center differential with a locking feature, Downhill Assist Control, and Active Traction Control.
