Fun, frugal, and affordable, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is a rarity often overlooked in a sea of compact crossover SUVs and small sedans. However, we loved driving the Corolla Hatchback, as it provides the kind of comfort and handling only found in a low-slung car.
Beyond its affordable price, good fuel economy, and generous standard equipment, the Corolla Hatchback carries on the Corolla tradition of exceptional reliability, strong resale, and a high-quality build.
Offered in SE, Nightshade, and XSE trim levels, the Corolla Hatchback has a little something for everyone, unless that something is powertrain choice, in which case you may be disappointed. All Corolla Hatchbacks feature a 169-horsepower 4-cylinder engine coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Unlike the Subaru Impreza, the Corolla Hatchback doesn’t offer all-wheel drive (AWD), nor does it come with a manual transmission, like the Mazda3. The Mitsubishi Mirage undercuts the Corolla Hatchback’s price by a wide margin but doesn’t offer near the power, features, resale, or interior space. 2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback SE: $23,355
The SE trim bundles an impressive roster of advanced safety systems with several creature comforts. It is ideal for budget-minded shoppers or those who don’t care about things like heated seats or a killer audio system.
Toyota’s commitment to safety starts with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 driver-assist suite. It’s standard on the SE and includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, full-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning with steering assist, and lane tracing assist, which helps keep the car centered in its lane when using adaptive cruise control.
Also included are automatic high-beam headlights and Road Sign Assist, which can recognize speed limit, Stop, Yield, and Do Not Enter signs and display an icon in the instrument cluster. Proactive Driving Assist can automatically apply the brakes to slow the Corolla before a curve if necessary.
The Corolla Hatchback SE features 16-inch alloy wheels, auto on/off LED headlights, a color-keyed rear spoiler, heated side mirrors, and variable intermittent front and rear wipers.
Toyota’s SmartKey keyless entry lets you unlock the doors and start the car without holding the key fob in your hand. So long as the fob is in your purse or pocket, you need only touch the door handle to unlock the doors. Once inside, a push-button start fires up the engine.
The SE’s cabin features cloth-covered, manually adjustable sport front seats, which our testers found comfortable and supportive for drivers of all sizes. The 60/40-split folding rear seat includes a fold-down armrest and cup holders.
Standard amenities include a leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters, one-touch up/down power windows, single-zone automatic climate control, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, and three drive modes: Sport, Eco, and Normal.
Four USB-C charge ports (two in front and two in the back seat) and one 12-volt outlet provide power for devices.
The SE’s infotainment setup has an 8-inch color touchscreen controlling a 6-speaker audio system. Features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
Toyota’s Safety and Service Connect apps offer up to a 10-year trial subscription, with other connected apps such as Drive Connect offering a subscription service that includes cloud-based navigation, Toyota’s Intelligent Assistant (“Hey, Toyota”), and Destination Assist.
The SE Premium Package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a wireless charging pad.

2024 Toyota Corolla Hatchback XSE: $26,655
Upgrading to the XSE trim brings many desirable features while keeping the pricing reasonable. It uses the same 4-cylinder engine as the base SE model but has a lower EPA combined fuel economy rating of 33 mpg.
The XSE trim is slightly sportier because of its integrated LED fog lights, dual chrome-colored rear exhaust diffuser accents, and 18-inch graphite-colored alloy wheels.
The Corolla Hatchback XSE includes the contents of the SE Premium Package. That means blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a wireless charging pad.
