The 2024 Toyota GR86 is one of only a handful of affordable sports cars, offering a manual transmission, a tiny rear seat, two doors, and endless driving enjoyment. It joins its sister car, the Subaru BRZ, alongside competitors like the Mazda MX-5 Miata and base Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.
Toyota offers the Trueno Edition along with the base and Premium trims, echoing the iconic 1984 Corolla Sport GT-S. The limited edition (only 860 are heading our way) Trueno includes Brembo brakes, unique exterior and interior styling, and Sachs dampers.
Regardless of trim, the GR86 derives its power from a 228-horsepower 2.4-liter engine paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. To get the most from this powerplant, Toyota recommends using premium fuel.
What’s New:
Along with the limited-edition Trueno Edition, the GR86 gets a new Performance Package that adds Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers. The package can be added to any 2022 or 2023 GR86 with 18-inch wheels.
Manual transmission models now have the same additional safety systems standard when ordering the automatic transmission. They include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and lead-vehicle start alert.
Our Recommendation:
We’d pick the GR86 Premium over the base trim. It has a nicer interior and a few more features that make it worth the modest price bump.
These estimates for the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) include the $1,095 factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge).

2024 Toyota GR86: $29,495 (MT), $30,995 (AT)
The base 2024 Toyota GR86 coupe is one of those rare entry-level cars that seems almost perfect as is. It has a 228-horsepower 2.4-liter boxer engine, a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission, and a limited-slip differential.
Standard driver aids include adaptive cruise control, auto high-beam headlights, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Also included are lane-departure warning, lead vehicle start alert, rear parking sensors, and sway warning.
An automatic transmission is available for an additional charge, bringing rear reverse automatic braking.
The GR86 features a MacPherson strut front suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, and GR (Gazoo Racing)-tuned springs and shocks. Buyers also get a year’s membership to the National Auto Sport Association, which includes one free high-performance driving event.
Starting with the GR86’s exterior, you will find an aggressive front end with a black mesh grille, functional black front wheel arch air outlets, and 17-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in high-performance tires. There is no spare tire, but the GR86 does include a tire repair kit.
The base 2024 Toyota GR86 coupe features LED headlights and taillights, heated power side mirrors, variable intermittent front wipers, dual chrome-tipped exhaust, and LED side marker lights. Smart Key keyless entry with touch-to-unlock door handles and push-button start also come standard.
Moving to the interior, we find one-touch up/down power windows, power door locks, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a small-diameter leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with Bluetooth, audio, and cruise controls. Automatic models feature steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles and additional buttons for adaptive cruise control.
A 7-inch color digital instrument cluster features differing themes that vary when cycling among the three drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Snow. Manual transmission cars have an additional Track mode that moves the tachometer to the cluster’s center and displays gauges for oil, coolant temp, and a lap timer.
Durable cloth covers the manually adjustable front seats and single folding rear seat.
The GR86’s multimedia setup includes a 6-speaker audio system and an 8-inch touchscreen accommodating Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Also accessible are several Toyota Connected Services with a 1-year trial to the Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Remote Connect apps.

2024 Toyota GR86 includes:
Manual transmission – An automatic is optional if you must, but we love that this sports car comes standard with a traditional stick shift.
Digital instrument cluster – This configurable digital screen provides various information, including track lap times and G-force readings.
Dual-zone automatic climate control – Hard knobs and dials are a welcome departure from touchscreen-style systems, allowing the driver and passenger to regulate air temperature from the vents quickly.
2024 Toyota GR86 Premium: $32,095 (MT), $33,595 (AT)
Adding to the base coupe’s features, the GR86 Premium includes 18-inch matte-black painted alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, a color-keyed duck-billed rear spoiler, and adaptive LED headlights.
Like the base GR86, the Premium features additional driver aids if you opt for the automatic transmission. However, the Premium has a standard blind-spot monitor regardless of transmission choice.
Interior upgrades include heated front seats, sport seats with leather bolsters and perforated Ultrasuede inserts, aluminum sport pedals, lighted visor vanity mirrors, and an 8-speaker stereo with an amplifier. Those wanting better sound can opt for a dealer-installed 200-watt subwoofer.
This year, a Performance Package adds Brembo 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brakes and ZF Sachs dampers.

Building off the Premium trim, the limited-run Trueno Edition bolsters its performance credentials with contents from the new Performance Package, namely Brembo brakes and Sachs dampers.
Available with either transmission, the Trueno distinguishes itself with black hood and side panel graphics, a black-painted duckbill spoiler, 18-inch black metallic finished 10-spoke wheels, and black mirror caps.
The interior gets special attention, too, with special edition Ultrasuede sport seats trimmed in red leather, a red-stitched shift boot and steering wheel, and a Trueno Edition logoed shift knob.

2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition includes:
Brembo brakes – Painted red calipers let everyone know Brembo brakes are there to stop on a dime.
ZF Sachs dampers – Filled with high-pressure nitrogen and oil, these shocks ensure maximum ground contact, stable steering, and good feedback across a range of road surfaces.
Custom graphics – We really like the matte black hood and door graphics that make the GR86 look even more wicked.
