If you know off-road vehicles, you know the name Land Cruiser. Toyota’s legendary SUV has a loyal fan base spanning more than 60 years. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser retains its rugged personality, body-on-frame architecture, and tenacious off-road ability, but it is now armed with cutting-edge electronics and a hybrid powertrain.
One surprising aspect of the new Land Cruiser is its seating arrangement, limited to five passengers in two rows. That may give rivals like the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Ford Explorer, and Kia Telluride a slight edge. On the flip side, this setup provides a massive cargo area and storage space, ideal for bulky gear or items that need safekeeping.
The Land Cruiser offers three trims: 1958, Land Cruiser, and First Edition. All three derive power from a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Together, the pair pump out 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Power runs to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Toyota says this powerplant provides all the might of a V8 but with a 23-mpg combined fuel economy rating.
Let’s dive in and see which trim is best for you.

Our Recommendation:
The Land Cruiser is the one to get if you expect a modest sampling of amenities in a $60,000-plus SUV. However, if your primary goal is off-roading, the 1958 has everything you need without the frills.

Moving to the exterior reveals retro round LED headlights with integrated fog lights, Smart Key proximity keyless entry on all four doors and liftgate, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, front wiper de-icers, 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels, and skid plate protection for the engine, transmission, and transfer case.
The 1958 interior touts cloth upholstery and manually adjustable heated front seats. A 7-inch configurable digital gauge cluster and manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel are directly in front of the driver.
Additional cabin amenities include one-touch up/down power windows, 3-zone automatic climate controls with rear seat control panel, a 2,400-watt AC inverter, six USB ports, LED interior illumination, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink universal transceiver.
