The 2024 Volkswagen Taos is the smallest and most affordable SUV in the Volkswagen model range. Its compact size makes it an easy SUV to drive in the city, and its impressive interior space makes it work well as a small family SUV. With a distinct aesthetic inside and out and a unique driving character, the VW Taos is something different in the competitive subcompact SUV class.
The Taos is on the bigger side of subcompact SUVs, competing with the likes of the Jeep Compass, Subaru Crosstrek, and Chevy Trailblazer.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard. These models come with a conventional 8-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive (AWD) models get a sportier but less refined 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. We wish VW offered an AWD Taos with the smoother 8-speed.

According to the EPA, the FWD Taos is rated at 28 mpg city/36 mpg highway/31 mpg combined. With optional 4Motion AWD, that drops a fair amount to 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.
Standard features include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED reflector headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power mirrors, cloth seats, a heated steering wheel, push-button start, an 8-inch Digital Cockpit gauge cluster, an MIB2 infotainment system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, two USB-C ports, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and HD Radio.
The IQ.Drive safety tech suite now comes standard on every VW Taos, including the S. It bundles driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams.
Opting for 4Motion AWD ($2,340) adds a few extra standard features, including 18-inch wheels, heated front washer nozzles, heated mirrors, and heated front seats. There are no other factory options available for the 2024 Taos S.

Ordering the SE also means you get the VW’s MIB3 infotainment system, which has an 8-inch screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and SiriusXM. Additional tech features include a wireless charging pad, a rear USB-C port, and a 6-speaker audio system.
All-wheel drive is a $1,450 option on the Taos SE. Additional options include 18-inch black wheels ($395, FWD only), 19-inch black wheels ($595, AWD only), a panoramic sunroof ($1,200), and a few premium paint options ($395-$790).
