In a crowded class of compact SUVs, the Volkswagen Tiguan is something a little different. It has a conservative German design inside and out, and its driving character is a little more fun than the average compact SUV. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) S, SE, and SE R-Line Black models come standard with a third, albeit small, row of seats, which is uncommon in this class.
Built in Puebla, Mexico, the Tiguan — VW’s best-selling model in the U.S. — competes with other compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, but its third row also makes it competitive with the Mitsubishi Outlander and Kia Sorento, two similarly priced midsize SUVs with standard 3-row seating.

What’s New:
The IQ.Drive safety tech suite comes standard on every trim of the Tiguan now, including the affordable S model. This model year’s additional standard features for the S trim include an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, and a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel.
Note: We expect this to be the final model year for this generation of the Tiguan. An all-new model is expected for 2025, with perhaps one version having a plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Our Recommendation:
The midrange SE trim is the best buy in the Tiguan lineup. It has niceties like a power liftgate, leatherette seats, automatic climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, and wireless charging, all at a reasonable price point.
