The 2024 Volvo S90 luxury sedan stands apart from other luxury cars, offering Scandinavian simplicity in its styling and accommodations. Safety is front and center because it’s a Volvo, but there’s also efficiency, as evidenced by the plug-in hybrid models. And, because the S90 doesn’t have the same sales volume as the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, or Genesis G80, it carries an air of exclusivity.
The standard S90 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and mild hybrid arrangement, producing a healthy 295 horsepower. Powering the plug-in S90 Recharge is a larger battery pack and electric motor producing an impressive 455 hp, giving this big Volvo sedan an all-electric cruising range of 38 miles.
Both the S90 and S90 Recharge come standard with all-wheel drive.

Our Recommendation:
The base Volvo S90 Plus comes nicely equipped and can be upgraded with a better audio system, but the new S90 Recharge Plus is the model we’d pick. The new Recharge Plus trim’s low price compared to the Ultimate makes it a viable option, and its power is more in line with what luxury buyers expect.

2024 Volvo S90 Plus: $59,695
The S90 Plus is the least expensive trim, but its list of standard and available luxury features makes it feel like a bargain.
The S90 is big on visibility. Its adaptive LED headlights turn in the direction of the steering wheel, while LED fog lights double as cornering lamps. Power washers fitted to the headlights help keep the lenses clean as needed, and rain-sensing wipers with integrated washers activate when detecting water or mist on the windshield. The S90’s power-folding heated side mirrors include an auto-dimming feature. They also tilt down when placing the transmission in reverse.
The S90 Plus includes 19-inch alloy wheels and a keyless entry system with a proximity key fob that unlocks the vehicle and trunk when pulling the door handle. The fob can also control the power-operated trunk lid, a $200 option.
Slipping inside the S90 reveals a sleek yet straightforward interior with clear Scandinavian design elements, such as grained leather upholstery and Gray Ash wood accents. Standard amenities include power front seats with driver’s seat power lumbar and memory features, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power-folding rear seat with power folding headrests.
A 4-zone climate control system comes standard and includes an air purifier and an after-run parking system that keeps pumping air into the cabin for up to 15 minutes after the engine shuts off.
A panoramic glass moonroof with a power sunshade gives the entire cabin an airy quality. Rear passengers enjoy power sunshades over the back window and side door glass; individual vents and climate control add to their comfort also.
High-tech features include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 360-degree surround-view monitor, adjustable ambient interior lighting, and adaptive power steering.
The standard audio system features a 220-watt amp and 10 speakers. It’s connected to a massive center touchscreen with Google built-in apps and services such as Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play store. Apple CarPlay comes standard (late availability), as do Bluetooth streaming and SiriusXM satellite radio.
Being a Volvo, safety is a top priority. The S90 is chock-full of active and passive features. Standard driver aids include forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
Oncoming Lane Mitigation can steer the car back into its lane if it unintentionally crosses the center divide.
Additional systems include front, side, and rear parking sensors, rear emergency braking, road sign recognition, and a rear collision warning that detects a rapidly approaching vehicle from behind. The system will alert the approaching driver by activating all indicator lights rapidly. If a collision is unavoidable, the system tightens the seatbelts and applies full brakes to help reduce the possibility of whiplash injury.
Adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist help maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and keep the S90 centered in its lane while driving. The system can even slow, stop, and then resume speed once traffic begins to move.
Pilot Assist is so advanced it can sense if there is no driver interaction (such as when the driver suffers a medical emergency). It will then bring the vehicle to a stop, activate the hazard lights, and call emergency services.
Optional upgrades for the Volvo S90 Plus include a 600-watt 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system ($800) and 20-inch alloy wheels ($800).

2024 Volvo S90 Plus includes:
Heated front and rear seats – Gives outboard passengers the ability to warm their seats. Backseat passengers also enjoy individual climate controls.
Panoramic moonroof – Covers the entire cabin, allowing more light or fresh air. It includes a power sunshade when a darker cabin is preferred.
Pilot Assist – This active driver assist system can steer the S90 on certain roads, maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and even operate in stop-and-go traffic.
2024 Volvo S90 Ultimate: $65,295
The Volvo S90 Ultimate uses the same engine and suspension as the Plus but adds more luxury touches and optional equipment.
Building off the Plus trim’s generous standard equipment list, the Ultimate adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a color head-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, and a crystal gear selector knob by Orrefors of Sweden.
The Ultimate’s front seats are upgraded with ventilation, 4-way power lumbar support, and memory for the passenger seat. The driver and front passenger seats gain power seat cushion extensions and power side bolsters.
The S90 B6 Ultimate also has a tailored dashboard, upper door panels, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
Buyers can upgrade to the available Lounge Package ($1,500) that adds massaging front seats, ventilated rear seats, and a rear seat luxury armrest.

The Recharge’s hybrid electric powertrain produces 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque, allowing the dual motor powerplant to propel the S90 PHEV to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.
The S90 Recharge Plus has the same content and options as the gas-only S90 Plus, with a few exceptions. The Recharge Plus does not include fog lights and has a tire repair kit, whereas the gas model has a temporary spare. The Polestar Engineered Optimization package ($1,400) is an option unique to the Recharge models. It adds software that delivers what Volvo calls “a more precise and balanced driving experience,” with precise control over the shift points, throttle response, and midrange engine performance.
