2024 Volvo V90: Choosing the Right Trim

Once plentiful, the station wagon has ceded ground to the SUV. With only a handful of the genre left, wagon lovers have limited options. One of the best, however, is the 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country. Combining safety, luxury, and off-road ability, the V90 Cross Country strikes a nice compromise between a large and bulky SUV and a sleek luxury sedan.

Volvo offers only two trims for the V90 Cross Country: Plus and Ultimate. Both feature a lifted body, standard all-wheel drive (AWD), and a 295-horsepower mild-hybrid engine. We think Volvo has done an excellent job with equipment, options, and pricing.

For those looking to pay a little less but get the same capability, the Subaru Outback Touring or Wilderness will likely suffice. Those willing to spend considerably more may like that added tech in the Audi A6 allroad and Mercedes-Benz E 450 All-Terrain Wagon.

What’s New:

The 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country carries over with no significant changes. Metallic paint is a no-cost option, and a new color, Vapour Grey, replaces Blackstone and Thunder Grey.

Our Recommendation:

We’d pick the V90 Cross Country in Ultimate trim for its top-of-the-line status, excellent front seats, and available Bowers & Wilkins audio upgrade. The Ultimate provides impressive luxury and comfort for about an extra $200 monthly payment when so equipped.

These are the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and include the $1,195 factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge). Prices are current at the time of publishing.

2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country Plus: $61,195

If you’re not all about fancy massaging seats and a killer audio system, the V90 Cross Country Plus trim has enough bells and whistles to satisfy most luxury buyers. The Plus also offers a generous optional equipment list, providing more luxury, tech, and even an upgraded audio system.

Because cutting-edge safety technology is Volvo’s calling card, it should come as no surprise Volvo makes every possible passive and active safety system standard. While many luxury brands provide a basic safety package with optional upgrades, the V90 Cross Country Plus includes forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic detection with rear braking.

Additional equipment includes a driver attention monitor, road sign information (displays an icon in the instrument cluster showing the posted speed limit), and Oncoming Lane Mitigation that steers the car back into its lane should it cross the divider line into oncoming traffic.

Also included with the Plus trim are adaptive cruise control and Volvo’s Pilot Assist, which can automatically steer the car on roads with clear lane markings. This system works with adaptive cruise control to keep the V90 centered in its lane without input from the driver. However, this is not a fully autonomous system; it will prompt you to keep your hands on the wheel after about 20 seconds.

Rounding out the safety system is a 360-degree Surround View camera, front and rear parking sensors, slippery road alert, and hazard light alert, which warns if another Volvo driver has activated their hazard lights. The system works via the cloud-based infotainment system, sharing information about road conditions or disabled vehicles with other Volvo cars using the same system.

Standard vehicle equipment includes a panoramic glass moonroof with a power sunshade, a hands-free power liftgate, adaptive LED headlights that turn in the direction of the steering wheel, automatic high beams, and LED fog lights with integrated cornering lights.

The V90 Cross Country Plus rides on handsome 19-inch alloy wheels. Convenience features include rain-sensing wipers with integrated washers, auto-dimming power retractable heated side mirrors with reverse tilt down, tinted rear privacy glass, and aluminum roof rails.

Volvo’s keyless entry and start includes a proximity key fob that must only be in your purse or pocket. With the fob close by, grasping the door handle unlocks the car. Once inside, a push of a button starts the engine.

If you seek luxury, look at the Plus’ standard features. There’s leather upholstery on the seats and door panels, a 4-zone automatic climate control system featuring rear seat controls and air vents, and power heated front seats with 2-way power lumbar support and driver’s seat memory. The back seat features a pass-through for longer items, mechanical release levers, and power-folding rear seat headrests.

The V90 Cross Country Plus includes a configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, and a large center touchscreen controlling media, climate, and various interior features such as the heated front seats.

Google built-in comes standard, granting access to Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play store (included for four years). Apple CarPlay is also onboard, as are Volvo’s connected services, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth streaming.

The standard audio system consists of a 220-watt amp driving 10 speakers, but buyers can upgrade to a 600-watt 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system ($800).

Other V90 Cross Country Plus options include a Climate Package ($750) with a heated steering wheel, headlight washers, and a choice between heated outboard rear seats or outer position rear booster cushions. Buyers can also choose 20-inch wheels ($800) and special performance software upgrades in the Polestar Engineered Optimization package ($1,400).

4-zone climate control – Allows front and rear occupants to set the air temperature for their seating position.

360-degree Surround View camera – Provides a complete view around the vehicle, particularly helpful when parking or maneuvering with limited visibility.

2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country Ultimate: $66,795

The Ultimate trim builds off the Plus, adding more luxury features but no mechanical upgrades.

Nappa leather upholstery covers the seats, with upgraded driver and front passenger seats featuring 4-way power lumbar support, massaging backrest, power side bolsters, power seat cushion extensions, cooling ventilation, and passenger seat memory.

The Ultimate has the Plus trim’s optional Harman Kardon audio system as standard, along with rear side-door sunshades, a head-up display, tailored dashboard and upper door panels, 20-inch alloy wheels, and an Orrefors glassworks crystal gear shifter selector.

Options for the V90 Ultimate beyond the Plus’ choices include 21-inch alloy wheels ($800), Four-C adaptive air suspension ($1,200), and a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system with 19 speakers and a 1,460-watt amplifier ($3,200).
