Subaru is known for its Symmetrical AWD system, which offers exceptional handling on various surfaces, from dirt to snow and everything in between. However, not many may know that Subaru also makes hybrid vehicles. The first Subaru to feature a hybrid powertrain was the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. After a few-year production hiatus, Subaru started making hybrids again and brought the Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle to market. While the Crosstrek PHEV had a longer production run than the Crosstrek Hybrid, it was discontinued after a few years of production.

Despite discontinuing the Crosstrek Hybrid models, Subaru isn’t giving up on finding the winning formula and will build a Forester Hybrid. With stricter emissions standards on the horizon, Subaru will likely continue to expand its hybrid vehicle lineup.

Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/subaru">Subaru</a> Crosstrek Hybrid was introduced in 2014 and discontinued in 2016. The first iteration offers a modest boost in city fuel efficiency compared to the gasoline version. Expect around an 11% increase in the city with no measurable gains on the highway for fuel efficiency compared to a non-hybrid Crosstrek with CVT transmission.

The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/plug-in-hybrid/subaru/crosstrek">Subaru Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle</a> (PHEV) was first available from 2019 until 2023. Its 8.8 kWh battery provides 17 miles of electric-only driving at a maximum speed of 65 MPH. The battery takes 5 hours to recharge on a standard 120V outlet and only 2 hours on a 240V outlet. The combined fuel economy is approximately 20% better than a gasoline-only Crosstrek with a CVT transmission.


Subaru Forester Hybrid

The Subaru Forester Hybrid isn’t available yet, and Subaru hasn’t released much information regarding vehicle specifications. More information about the upcoming Forester Hybrid should be available in late 2024 or early 2025.
